wheel sounds
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 5, 2005 10:22 AM
I just thought I would share a little thing I do to some of my rolling stock that adds realism to the train as it is passing by . I like to take a Dremmel tool and grind a small flat spot on one of the wheels of say a boxcar . When the car is passing by you hear a THUMP, THUMP,THUMP sound . Metal wheels of course work best but I have done it on some old Lionel gons that I have and it sounded cool on them too . Dont go crazy and do it a little at a time till the desired effect is achieved . I used to do this on my HO rolling stock too with no ill effects as far as derailing . We pay big bucks for sound systems and here is a sound that one can have for free. When the train passes it is so cool cuz some of the cars squeak and some thump by . If you dont like the effect replace the wheel , but I think you will be liking it too . Here is a link to a short mpeg we did last year that you can hear what I am talking about . Hope this link works ,posted pictures but haven't tried movies . [img]http://planetdonnstudios.com/mike/web/movies/MOV00161s.MPG[img/]

I've never tried this.I will have a listen.
I know what you mean about the joiner sounds though. All my trains and trams are made extremely heavy! Also my track is laid on wood. When they hit a join, you hear it!

Blue Aster,

That sounds like a good idea. I'll download that file later, 54meg on dialup takes a LONG time.

Thanks

Mike, I fixed the link for you above. It sounds great on your clip!

I have four gable-bottom LGB field railway cars I am also fond of because of the way their shape amplifies the sound. I'll have to try this tip to add to the effect.
