I am intending to purchase a USA Trains 20 Tonner loco. Coming from UK side of the Atlantic, my knowledge of the loco is limited. Was there a prototype or was it what we call a `fun` engine.

I own one I have the NYC version.
As far as I am aware there is no prototype for it our US friends will correct me if I am wrong.
However it does have the looks of a NW?? type shunting loco and looks very believable.
I would go as far as to call it a freelance model.
Too me a fun type locomotive would be the martian lander thingy that LGB do.
Where as the Mighty Moe is a very presentable and believable locomotive
I have found it runs well at a reasonable speed and is reliable.
Must get the yard built one day and a shunters float..

I HAVE TWO USA 20 TONNERS , THEY WORK FINE, I PULL MAYBE 6-CARS WITH THEM. BUT MY TRACK GOES FROM GROUND LEVEL TO 23 INCHES HIGH. I ALSO HAVE LITTLE CRITTERS AND RS-3-S AND U-25-B ,AND A C16,AND ONE CENTER CAB. [#welcome] TO THE FOURM BEN

Yeah these are "fun" models. I have never seen a prototype in any of the reference books or sources that I have. In reality, there's far too much overhang on this model the pushing and pulling of cars would tend to rock the coupler up and down too far and would have a damaging effect on the coupler mounting. The USA 20tonner is basically just a power truck with a shortened SW1 body mounted to it but as mentioed it has far too much overhang to my eye.

Aristo Crafts lil'Critter model is similar a Fun model with no known prototype. Its basically the cab and nose from a RS3. but it look far more convincing than the USA version.

HLW Mack on the otherhand IS based on prototype Mack built in the 1920's

Thanks for the info on the mack truck. Visited the web, gained more info and placed my order. One Mack is about to cross the Atlantic.

You won't be dissapointed
The little Mack locomotive is a good runner and would look good with a short combine of the same manufacturer or a couple of short freight cars and bobber caboose

Actually all three are good runners, the Mack is darn near bulletproof but lacks detail. the LilCritter looks great but is not prototypical but looks so convincing it doesnt matter. Only the 20tonner just to my eye looks odd.

I didn't want to get into it, i have been a diabetic since 1986 , and things have got to where i take pills and several shots a day and my eyes are not what they should be , this person makes 1 post and it was aimed at me. after a few days i'll be back .i just need to cool my heels, before i say something i don't want to , .this is not the place , i wanted this to happen , but it did. thanks- brian and mat for your support ben

I did not purchase Moe in the end. Vic recomended the Hartland Mighty Mack. Unfortunately the firm I ordered it from did not did not deliver it to my friend before he came back to the UK for a visit. So it sits in his house in Texas until he comes over again. Should be a nice christmas present to myself.

It seems an age but my Mack Switcher has finally arrived in the UK. It was a combination of late delivery and my boss not coming home from Texas for a while.
It runs well. I can see that it needs a little `roughing up` as it does look too `plastic` and lacking detail. A winter job. All in all, a bargain price.

Ian, you are correct about the original finish looking too plastic. Mine was originally the factory yellow, but I repainted it Caterpillar yellow and it made all the difference in the world. In addition I changed the windows and some of the details.

The key to getting it apart is to remove horn from the roof, then reach in with a small screwdriver to push out the plastic rods that carry light to the headlights. If I were you, I would try to avoid removing the motor block since I have heard horror tales about the plastic tabs breaking off.

You got that right! I always said that the USN was plain stupid to get rid of the class when 80% of the world's population still lived within the range of it's guns! They can say what they want about thier bird farms and quick retribution from them, but it takes time to target, launch, and attack from a couple of hundred miles offshore. Can you imagine the reaction of a bunch of insurgents sitting around thier campfire when a shell the weight of a volkswagon drops on them out of nowhere???
I felt that they should have taken the BB's and done a Maersk Line Manuver on them. Maersk had some big steam turbine container ships that they just cut the bottom of the engineroom out of and dropped the steam plant right out for scrap and then put some big slow speed diesels back in. Heck, both B&W and Sulzer have diesels in excess of 60 thousand HP; and each shaft on the BB was 50 thou! This is that old soapbox thing again, but I really think they could have cut fuel costs by 50 or 60%, crew size by 60%, and other operating costs commensurately. They say that today's world of warfare is a putting out the fires kinda thing, the BB would have been very useful in today's scenario!
