Texas model train buffs
Posted by Texas-trainlover on Thursday, October 28, 2010 8:09 PM

Dear folks,

I have loved trains and model trains since I was a fairly young child.  My dad bought me a Lionel steam locomotive set when I was five years old.  I just discovered your train newsletter a few minutes ago.

My question is this.  I live in the Highland Lakes area of Texas NW of Austin, Texas.  Are there any model railroader clubs around my area?  Are there any garden railroaders out there?  I would be happy to get to meet any other toy and full-size railroad fans.  Are there any Texas model railroad clubs?   I just looked through all the general posts.  I looked at Wichita and found out to my dismay it was in Kansas, not Wichita Falls, Texas.

I suppose I should tell what happened when I saw my new railroad train, set up to go around our nine foot tall Christmas tree.  As the train came near me with its whistle blowing, a gift I had not requested and had no desire for whatsoever,  I screamed bloody murder and ran and hid behind my mother's skirts.  Every time the train came near me, I screamed and ran to hide behind the furniture.  I think I hid from the train for three or four days before I figured out it was not going to jump the tracks and get me. I think my dad mostly got the big train for himself.   I may have only been four years old.  I was pretty little.  However, I got over it and became as fond of playing with the train as my dad was and finally we had two locomotives and a pretty extensive set-up.   It may be better not to get loud, noisy model train sets for toddlers.

Search/look for the San Antonio Garden Railroad Society or SAGRS, thats the closest group to Austin I can think of, I'm pretty sure they'll have some members up your way.

   Have fun with your trains
