1" Scale Union Pacific Big Boy Locomotive....
Posted by Bigboymama on Saturday, May 30, 2009 9:37 PM

...is ready to come out of hibernation.  We purchased this steam locomotive from a McDONNELL-dOUGLAS AEROSPACE ENGINEER'S ESTATE IN 1980.  His son said it was his dad's pride and joy and it took him 22 years to complete it.  He include original plans and wooden molds. It is a perfect replica in every way, articulates 4-8-8-4 wheel configuration. SInce it is one of a kind, it generates a lot of excitement when we used to exhibit  it at local shows.  It has been garagebound now doe more than a decade and we need to sell it, but don't know where to begin to find a market.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.  Oh, and it has a tender as well.

Hi   First thing to think about is that it will need a complete overhall, as its not been run for ten years  IE boiler will need a new cert.  Im taking it that it is live steam?   Having said that start by looking at clubs that will have the money and people to put it back in full working order.  Or a private indevidual that likes that sort of engine.    Hope this gives you a starting point.

There's a magazine that caters to the larger ride on scales. I'm guessing this rides on about 4.75" gauge track? Get all the info together with pics and place and ad there. I can't remember the name but I'm sure someone will chime in with it.

www.livesteaming.com has a 'For Sale' page.  For the right price, someone will buy this locomotive.  I'll take time, but that person is out there.  Unfortunatley, there are very few 1" scale folks compared to the 1.5" scalers.

The scale is a real problem. Attempting to find one that has track set up for that scale???????.

It probably will become a display item. You might be lucky to find some one who can set up his yard to match the scale. Then he will have a problem finding trucks for cars.

If I was this younger I sure as I could. I would just to run it.

I seen one running near Eugene OR. back in 1988. He had it built in England. he had a large live steam club on his properity.

There are lots of 4.75" and 5" gauge railways around, you just have to know where they are.  There are also a number of manufacturers that make various kits for .75" through 1.5" scale if one isn't inclined to make them themselves.

You also have to know the community.  Advertising a 1" scale big boy in Garden Railways magazine won't get you anywhere.  Ads in Live Steam magazine and on livesteaming.com, it'll find a good home.
