Hi Jim,
Planning to do an article in a few months in OGR, but they tend to hold things for a long time. My interests in casting include the basic 3 types:
1 Rock and brick mold castings using latex
2 bridge and building castings using plaster and/or concrete using custom made wood forms
3 making trains (wheels, chassis, gears and so on), using RTV and various types of resins, as well as lead, solder and other casting materials
casting is one of those interesting and fun subhobbies; who says toy trains are boring? It's probably the most creative hobby there is, with a lot of learning and adventure

The main body is carved from blue foam and the hot dog is several pieces of HO drain tile and a small rubber ball on the end. the front of it is modeling clay which was baked. The chaise is from a 1/43 scale SUV.

David - your casting and stuff is just very interesting. Are you going to write a dummies guide or something? Maybe you could make some PDF step by step files - I'd pay a couple $$$ to download it for "someday".

I think the Hot Wheels is either 1:64 (S gauge) or 1:87 (HO scale). I have not found anyone making a 1:48 or 1:43 O gauge scale one.

Here's my first attempt at solder wheels (one of which is O gauge). It didn't turn out perfect so I took the solder wheels and recast them using some epoxy in the mold to fill in some minor areas it didn't take. Worked well as you can see from photo #2. This was just a first attempt and no flux was used so anticipating a smoother flow on next time. THe whitish wheels in photo #2 were not cast by me.
Incidentally, that's another little trick. If the cast doesn't come out perfect, you can lather on more resin or epoxy in the mold and simply recast. Same goes for making RTV molds.
3rd photo shows tools I work with. Haven't used the lead yet, but if Thomas the Tank can be done in lead, then I figure I can do something with the lead when an idea hits me. Or, at least can make some sinkers or balls for muzzle loaders
Here’s the inside cast of the tipper (v-dump car). I got double use out of the mold by casting some gears on the top. The top of the concrete shell I was using broke, thus, I filled the tipper with RTV
Here’s my first attempt at pouring solder into a frog mold. This is exactly how it came out, no trimming or anything. Nearly perfect.

I got this lionel box car brand new off ebay for 12 bucks shipped with the box and paperwork...
found this a month ago at a yard sale for a quarter. i plan on repainting it nbut cant find the right paint....
these were gifts to me yesterday for fathers day.....dont know were my gf found them but they work great
