Best Transformer
Posted by MontanaBoy on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 8:25 PM
From my last posting, I asked if I could use American Flyer transformers. From that post, I decided to go with a NEW transformer. I would like to hear everybody's opinion on which one is the best of the best. My layout is going to be medium to large, but want a transformer that can grow with me.

AllAmerican.

I am not an expert on transformers. I use mostly Lionel KW's, and I run several brands of trains, not just Lionel. If I have a question I would refer to one man.

I'm using a Z1000 for an 8 by 4 layout, but it doesn't sound big enough for what you envision....

The alternatives for modern high output transformers are modern ZW, Z-4000, and the new MRC Pure Sine.  The latter two have two 180 watt variable tap outputs, the ZW can support up to four.  The ZW uses external bricks, the MRC and Z-4000 have "internal" step down transformers.  The Z-4000 has digital amp and volt meters, the Pure Sine has analog meters. These are all intended to be used as traditional toy train transformers but the ZW and Z-4000 have some modern tricks up their sleaves.  They work with Lionel and MTH's command control systems.

There is another alternative but these require use of elements of Lionel's TMCC system, specifically the CAB-1 and Command Base.  The Lionel TPC's (track Power Controllers) are probably the most powerful and flexible toy train power supplies available.  They can handle 300 or 400 watts of output per device.  They allow for remote throttle support and can handle 80-200-400 speed steps.  They also have macro key support to control conventional features of PS-1 and PS-2 locomotives.  These are what I use but they have no "console" module and require a power supply like a PowerHouse step down transformer or a PW supply outfitted with modern breakers or in-line fuses.

When everything else fails, play dead

I should clarify.

I run Old Marx, New Marx, (Ameritrains), Postwar Lionel, (Nothing newer than 1954), and on a small loop, AF.

So I do not have use for, the TMCC, CAB-1's etc, etc. I just run trains!

I run TMCC locos and have a little over 300 ft of track.  I have 14 guage wire for hot and ground and drops evry 10 feet or so.  I use a KW I bought from a reliable fellow at a train show.  The cord was getting a little tired so I contacted my LHS and he said he sent all his transformer customers to an electrical expert with transformers.  So I connected with the local expert and he really knew his stuff.  For $15 he fixed me up with a new cord and plug and checked out my transformer and said it performed well.  I have had this transformer for over 8 years now and it performs well.  At the suggestion of the experts on this forum I added a 5 amp auto fuse to protect my locos.

Echo on the Z4000- I have a 20 x 20 layout with two main lines and a small yard, temporary 027 track for now. I run all TMCC engines, and the Z4000 has more than enough juice for me to run two double- header trains at one time.

Newer ZW with the 180 watt blocks.  I have 2 ZWs with 8, 180 watt blocks, one to run all accessories and the other for running my trains.  Have DCS hooked up and TMCC.  Also can run conventional engines on two tracks with the Cab1.

I guess my first choice would be a Z-4000 from MTH.

If Right-of-Way was still in business, my first choice would most definitely have been that monster transformer they made, and which received almost universally favorable reviews (still does, in fact).

My MTH Z-4000 has served me well on a large layout.

I have Post War ZW's and KW's.  The folks at Todd's recommend Z4000 hands down.

The Z4000 is a good choice for current production. I agree with Alan on the ROW if you can find one. They still demand a premium price today. I use a little known transformer made years ago by Davis Trains called the Big Max. 2 Throttles each with 12 amps. Large buttons for bell, whistle, direction. Volt and Amp gauges. This was made after the ROW and before the Z4000 became available. Price was 800. Expensive but at the time used ZW's were around 300 and this one played nicely with the Proto 1 electronics. Presently it powers my command only layout and the knobs are left at 16v.

Now for my choice running the era of trains without modern electronics. The Al Trol throttle. You will need a power supply such as the Lionel bricks or even an older ZW as it basically varies a fixed voltage. Small and simple with a tether. Has memory feature to allow you to unplug it and move to another location. Extra receptacles were available along with cables. Not a lot of buttons and very user friendly. Brake and momentum feature, throttle, direction, bell and whistle. All in the size of a pack of butts. I have both Cab 1 as well as DCS and this throttle for simply running trains is my favorite. I'm sure there are plenty around gathering dust under someones layout. I ended up giving mine away.
