The only thing you need in O Gauge
Posted by Santa Fe Kent on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 12:18 PM

Feeling feisty lately.... had to take down the layout for a move. Then I got the Williams catalog. Those postwar illustrations about brought a tear to my eye, and I couldn't run anything. Well, I can look at CTT issues and (with any luck) annoy someone on this board.

Let's face it. Toy trains is all about Lionel O Gauge. And that boils down to these few essentials:

1. Santa Fe F3

2. Pennsy GG1

3. NYC Hudson

Everything else is just fluff (ie; extra, not needed, beside the point, etc.)

Modern roadnames, paint and locomotive styles are downright ugly. Don't need that in toy trains! If I had a choice between Conrail SD's and Rosie O'Donell, I would just move to Siberia. (with due respect to Agent 027, who I agree with except for this one thing!)

Now I just need to get a GG1, and I will have everything I need. Isn't Postwar great??!!

Post war Lionels and Marx are great stuff. You can collect them, run them, tinker with them, restore them, etc.

Kent,
If you llike postwar, fine- enjoy your trains. But keep the negative attitude and comments about the rest of O gauge to yourself.

And if you feel the need to catch a beating, just head down to your local bar and start talkin- I'm sure someone will be happy to put you on the floor in no time, tough guy.Dead [xx(]

I am very reluctant to agree with horse's patoot Donald Trump on anything, but it does seem to me that Rosie O'Donnell is O-gauge[oink-gauge and full scale].

csxt,
The negative comments were not about Homasote, they were refering to people who think Homasote is the only thing to use underneath their tracks- and quick to make negative comments about anything else.

Kent,
You have a good day too.

The only thing I need to enjoy toy trains, or any other for that matter, is some track, a transformer, some cars, and an engine. For my liking, a third rail is required, as all the wiring I know requires it, and also that the trains I enjoy most would not enjoy themselves on an O scale layout.

My current "layout" is an oval of Fastrack on the carpet, a CW-80 transformer, Annie, Clarabel, and whatever other cars my daughter fancies at the moment, and Thomas as an engine.

I like all three of the engines mentioned, and also own two of the three (if a 2046 small Hudson counts), but without track, transformer, and some cars, they just kinda sit there where they were left last. Which is fine; I enjoy seeing those walls lined with collections that I couldn't possibly afford in the CTT  issues.

I can't believe I'm typing this (as it's a grammer? issue, as I very rarely complete a sentence that doesn't have numerous errors, and that's omitting the curse words), but I'd guess this thread would get a lot better responses if were named "The only thing I need in O gauge".

Have fun,

Hmmm, I didn't stir up the hornet's nest much.... you guys are getting so easy-going....

You all must be running trains! Wish I could right now....

But you're all right, it doesn't really matter. All we need is track, transformer, some cars, and a loco (preferably steam so I can see all the rod action). I was just as happy when I started with the 1948 2026 set (with operating log car-- which still works). Man, we have so many options these days.... it pays to stop and look back. We have it pretty good now. Let's be thankful for that!

I still want to get the Pennsy GG1. Funny, never really cared for 'em till I saw one in real life, Wow!

PS: My posting comes in short occasional bursts, but I do read the forum all the time, and you guys are still the greatest! Time to fire up the tubes and put on a record.....

Kent,
Not even your flamer post could get me mad- I may not have a completed layout, but I do have some 027 up on my benchwork and I am running trains -NICE BIG, MODERN SCALE DIESELS!!!!Big Smile [:D]

Geno

P.S. you sound like you need to get a little loop of track and little transformer, an engine and a few cars, sit in the middle, you know the rest... go ahead, you'll feel betterWink [;)]

Only thing I need is a polite message board.  This site picks me up when I'm down--to  talk to calm, polite people about trains is a treat.  Stopped watching news shows/talk shows because of venom/rhetoric.  I come here for polite talk about trains.  For the most part, it's what I'm looking for.  Let's remember that and this site will remain a joy for many people.

Mth vs lionel--don't care enough to hurt other's feelings and stir pot
toy vs scale--ditto

york vs kid friendlier train shows--ditto

Love of trains--care

finding great train advice and people to talk to--appreciate it and care very much

Let's focus on the strengths of our beautiful hobby.  Without a layout because of our impending move, this is all I have in the hobby right now.  The respect and support here make not having a layout up and running bearable.

Can't stir me up much. I don't much care what anyone else considers "essential" (and none of the three mentioned in the initial post would be on my list in any case).  I'm in the hobby for my own relaxation, enjoyment, and fulfillment, so don't worry much at all about lawsuits, someone else's preference for one brand or another, debates over the "best" of anything, or even fussing and fuming over York or some other event.  I just do my own thing, in my own way, as time permits, and thoroughly enjoy reading everything I can get my hands on related to the hobby and playing with my trains whenever I can find the time.  Couldn't ask for a better hobby, just as long as one keeps things in perspective (something some folks really have a hard time doing).

I also enjoy the hobby vicariously through others' perspectives - through what I read in CTT, and on the forum. I've made my choices and am happy with them, but I like learning how others see things.

Morning Kent;  Such a nice sunny day and you have me totally confused.........With such a fine roster of locomotives, I envision a shiney postwar ZW as a power source...But now,,, a ZW can run four trains.. Did you forget to mention a Mickey Mouse Handcar or maybe a B-6 switcher??  BDT

I've been working since 11:00 last nite, but at about 6:00 am, I took a break and ran a couple of trains for about 30 or 40 laps - a set of Santa Fe F3's hauling two 6464's and four Sunoco two domers and the NYC F3's hauling two NYC operating cars and five Lehigh Valley Hoppers - each capped off with a Lionel Lines illuminated caboose.

Turned down the lights and they roared around the layout throwing lights all over teh room from the bright caboose lamps.

Definately one of the bennies of working from home . . .

Really I could use two things...

2. Endless supply of money
