dennis- there is a unit inside but it looks as bad as my e unit and only clicks...i did however lube it up and i am gonna try it  out later today..i would like to hear it..that would be great...

Just a thought, Zeke, but what if you put the HO on another level. Maybe on a mountain, or something like that.

Zeke - First, thanks for your service to this country. Have several relatives and many friends that are vets. Secondly, go ahead and use both HO and O on your layout. I have some of both, including a 1666 that I am resurrecting, and a lot of N scale. I have a 4' x 5'11" board that I am going to put down a loop of 027 and HO on. Thinking about elevating the N stuff and doing a small layout with it, just to have something to look at. Not going to do the N in the same size, so I will make some tunnels for the other 2. Not real interested in an elaborate layout at this time, get more enjoyment from fixing up old stuff and exercising them. Just my 2 cents worth. Sully

thanks sully...that means alot....i am currently doing a 4 x 16 layout....this is not permanent i dont think we shall see.....i have a 2 car garage  thats 40 x 30  and its completely empty right now...i was gonna use the whole thing but i have to many cars and not enough garage......i have 2 ...2 car garages but the other has my 64 1/2 stang and 55 chevy in it...and i had my 900 spg and a 69 charger roller in the other..the charger is staying in cuz i have a portable lift there also so the saab and this 73 torino are out side now...i was  gonna go larger and make a large layout but upon carefull thinking i cant sacrifice that space... so i am searching for ho and o gauge layouts but i havent found one...i will continue...i want to see how they interact and look together...thanks for the idea

Zeke - If you wanted to keep it only one level you could do something that would fold up against the wall of the garage, or use a winch and pull it up against the ceiling. Sully

thanks for the idea but to complicated...i was hoping to use them on the same layout..together...dont know if that will be possible..no big loss really  cuz i will ebay off the ho and get me some new track or something....but i am still trying to find pics of ho and o gauge together first....

  Can't think offhand of O and HO together, but if you can find pics of the current Lionel showroom layout they run O on the bottom and S on the top level.

It shows S and O in the lionel train book that came out a a year or 2 ago its looks alright but I think HO is to small to be with O.

ya your prolly right there...it was just a thought i was kicking around..

 

well good news sorta...i got some track cleaned good enough for me engine to run on..its not cycling but i got a part on the way with help from a awesome member here....but any ways i cleaned the tender som also and thought id see if the whistle works...well it does  sorta....see there is a grinding  clicking sorta noise coming from the tender...but you can here the whistle with it as well..so i  will clean it a little more and hopifully fix it...

 

heres a problem i dont know how to fix..when the train and tender are trying to get around the track if i hit the whistle switch on my 1033 the train speed s up ..alot almost derails...but thats when the whistle works...what gives?

hmm... dont know about the second problem but my 681 had the same problem with the whistle, I toatally replaced some of the wires in the tender and cleaned out the moter good and the grinding noise stopped.

Hello Zeke!   There is nothing wrong with your Transformer!   What is happening here is that when you activate the Whistle Controller on your Transformer a Small burst of DC Current is superimposed on the AC output to the Track in order to activate the Relay for the Whistle inside your Tender which also happens to cause the Engine to pick up speed as well. This is not so much a problem any more with the Electronic Whistles & Circuit Boards used in todays Trains though. The rule of Thumb when operating Postwar Trains with Whistles is to keep one hand on the Throttle while operating the Whistle in order to prevent the Train from picking up too much speed. Especially around corners. Hope this answers your question. Take Care.

  Check for cracks in the sound box of the whistle unit. The soundbox is the bakelite part. This may be why you're getting a grinding sound.

 BTW, I think HO and O has some potential. I would run the HOs on a elevated strip along the back wall. If done properly it can be really effective as forced perspective.

Zeke the best way is to use forced perspective by seperating each scale through seperate elevation and or distance between each scale. Another thought is to use the ho track to run On30 trains while running the O gauge trains and when ever you feel like running HO just don't run the O gauge but in the end you should do what looks the best to you By the way On30 is narrow gauge O scale trains if yopu are wondering what it is.

The grinding noise in the tender whistle is coming from the armature shaft. Take the brushplate off and clean the armature and brushes. Then oil the shaft at the bottom where it goes into the sound box. Put the brushplate back on and oil the top of the shaft (1 drop). The grinding noise will disappear as the oil works in.

oi tore it apart and all looks well i lubed every rotating part but its not helping..its a lil quieter but not enough...but the whistle works...lol

 

and i have to find a way to incorporate a ho track...i think i got enough room to do it seperate...my gf bought a bunch of stuff in a vegas train shop ...but all for ho...so i have to use it being a gift in all..but my o gauge is gonna be my primary...

 

im trying to talk her into letting me run the ho threw the house...we shall see
