Wow! That Hogwarts Express looks great. From the pics it looks like a GWR Castle class to me. If thats what the production set looks like then one will be finding its way over the pond.
That transformer looks good to, lets hope it works correctly on 50Hz.

That's a great looking transformer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By making the transformer look like one of the post war models, it taps into the nostalgic feeling most people associate with Lionel. I've also noticed that more and more tenders and rolling stock now have LIONEL LINES on them. Another great idea. The new Harry Potter set looks great too. I'll be picking one of those up.
The G-scale looks great too. My kids have been asking me to start a garden railroad. Looks like a good set to start with.And I wish Lionel wouls sell copies of that poster it has hanging in its showroom. Cool!

Laz, it was displayed with all starter sets. But look how long those coaches look. A nice looking train. I hope that zippy new transformer comes with it!
I really like the look of that new transformer. I would like to see some different throttle handles, those do not look very sturdy. But the design is very appealing.

Never pass on an opportunity to take a cheap shot at some other brand if you're a rabid loyalist. Perhaps some mature adults prefer a fictitious train for grownup tastes and interests, while others prefer a fictitious train based on a children's story.

The problem is that for the last 10 years one manufacturer in particular has set a very, very bad example in this regard :). We didn't start the fire......

By the way I didn't take a cheap shoot to another brand..just my view that Lionel is pursuing the right way with their license based all on Worldwide acclaimed fictionnal character...who will be see/read for at least another generation. (Thomas, PE Express and now Hogwart Express)
I don't like by the way the Lionel Nascar serie...don't get it and specially has been made on the very cheap side, except for the included fastrack.
And if it's true that that this new Lionel transformer will only be a 40 watts one then I will be glad to give it away free (shipping included) in case it come bundled with the Hogwart Express.
You guys were one step away from being imprisoned by the Rail-King for treasonous discussion concerning MTH, but he said he's letting it slide. Anyway, that Potter train looks gorgeous, and ditto for that retro-style transformer! I'm just afraid that this set has come too late to make a huge impact comparable to that of the Polar set...

Why? There's a new Potter book AND a new movie out this year. The timing seems as good as on the PE to me.

You're right, there will be a new book... the last book. After it's released, all this Potter buisness will probably loose a bit of steam. It would have been smarter to release this set for, I don't know, maybe the second movie - just after the fad started. Polar Express did well partially because it was released just as things got started and excitement was at its peak, rather than five years later when Polar is old hat and, say, the 3rd movie is coming out.

Hornby have produced the OO gauge Hogwarts Express from the first film onwards. Each new film gets a new version of the set even if its just a packaging change. They must be on to a good earner as they have stuck with the franchise. We did not buy a set when we had OO but we will for sure in O gauge! Also although its the last book, each book looks like its going to be made into a film so the franchise gets a boost each time a film is released. If Lionel get this right they should release the set just before the film premiers. JC get on the phone to Hamleys in London and get this set in a window display! (just make sure it works on 50Hz first)

Usually when this stuff goes on, whether it is products like cars, computers or toy trains, it's because one or more of the manufacturers actively foster the "in your face," scorched earth approach to marketing, and their fans pick up on it. That's what has happened with three rail trains. Does it mean a hill of beans? Not really, except to the participants and manufacturers.
Sort of like professional sports, or sports in general. Who cares who won the Olympic gold in hockey in 1980? A lot of people, although it's a little obscure as time goes on. Similarly, does the Super Bowl really mean ANYTHING in life? Hopefully not, but apparently people get pretty bummed out when their team loses :).
