Yes I have the other tender too. While I forget the list price on this engine (since I (and most people who bought CC items) bought direct from Lionel, what it listed at is what I paid, plus 6% tax) it was a bit more than the $500 mark, not that I plan on selling or anything.

Holy Moly!! It's weird that you bring this up. I had already thought about doing a conversion, since all the 682 parts are readily available and there are plenty of 681 locos to be found. This is REALLY bad news, but thanks for letting us know.

Just a heads up on the 682's. A dealer (store) in Northern NJ (now out of business) REGULARLY had his mechanic take 681's and add the linkage to make them 682's. They also apparently had the rubber stamps to renumber them. It was almost impossible to tell that they had been modified. It was perfect work to keep the mechanic busy during the summer doldrums.
I don't know how many in total that they made, but I would guess in the dozens at least. Back in the late 80's early 90's it was very hard to sell a 681 for a decent price and 682's were very hard to come by. This dealer magically always had one or two on his shelf. As soon as one would sell, another one magically appeared.
This is the same dealer who got caught selling a bunch of stolen trains (MINE). Anyway, just a heads up on the 682's. You may want to ask a lot of questions from a seller when you come across one. Real ones really are not common.

That's a dang good price for that caboose. I just had a hard time justifying paying it. It's certainly worth a lot MORE than that. Greenberg shows it at $335 in Excellent condition and this was brand new IN THE BOX. It would have completed my 18010 Turbine set. My two postwar S2 turbines need some minor parts replacement and/or repair. I was wondering what the best manual was for a parts list or exploded view with parts numbers? I saw Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manual for Lionel Trains, 1945-1969 (Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manuals) on Amazon, but one comment was the pages were reduced in size from their original 8 1/2 x 11 to 6x8 and many of the part numbers were unreadable. Not much help for my old eyes
I wondered if any other book is available that list these items in a more readable format? Perhaps from K-Line? Or is there a website where an exploded view of an S2 with part numbers is available?

None of the nice scale ones like you are talking about. I do have the Century Club (postwar style but with TMCC, etc) Turbine, but that's it for me. Maybe someday! :-)

No offense taken Dave. To be honest, if I hadn't already bought the 18010, I probably would have just gone with the newer version. I wish we HAD shows in my area. When I lived in a Chicago suburb, shows and dealers were all over the place. Now, I have neither . I am limited to online sources for trains.
The caboose...so far it's holding at $154 with 2 days left. If it will just stay there until I can snipe it at the last minute, I'll be okay. It seems like a LOT to pay for a caboose, and it IS. But they are quite rare and difficult to find at a reasonable price.
You are of course correct. I foolishly only looked in the book to see what year the new one was made. I never checked the price on the original.
I was basing my comments on what I used to see at shows in the area. I remember the 18010 priced (not sure I ever saw one sell or not) at or above $1200 before the new one was issued. When the new one was cataloged, it's list was $1200, so if you got through a large dealer it would probably be a bit less.
To my perceived value of these items, the new one was a no brainer over the old one at that time. Seems it still might be. :-) Glad you were able to get both. Now I guess you just need that caboose!

Not weird at all. In addition to the wireless tether, it is TMCC controlled, if you are into that. Also has a relatively recent version of Railsounds (RS 4.0, I think, but I could be mistaken). LOL...you missed the point. The 18010 is STILL going for the same amount as this loco...many times a lot MORE. As in $1500. Yet this loco is only selling for $974. Better check your Greenberg again. The 18010 in excellent condition is listed at $1350. This newer version with electronic updates in excellent condition is selling for $650. So there is no lowering of the 18010 at all. Trust me, I've been shopping for the 18010 for a LONG time. They are not cheap when new in the box. Even used they command a premium price.

Lee: Yep...it's the real deal. All brass. That's why it's so pricey. But I suspect it's going to sell for a LOT more than what it's at right now. It would make a nice addition to my S2, but I'm not sure I can afford it.

Well some stories DO have a happy ending I just took delivery of my New In Box 18010 Lionel S2 Steam Turbine. Cripes! That dang thing almost gave me a hernia carrying it inside!!!! I took the outer box off and took off the top foam cover. All the red ribbon ties are still intact. Looks like it hasn't been out of the box. Now I have to be patient and wait till after Christmas to get my permanent layout set up so I can run this beast. Over THIRTY INCHES long!!!!! 072 curves are MANDATORY. HA! I love it!!!!!
