Top for 494 rotating beacon
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 29, 2006 9:12 PM
Does anybody know where I could find a good quailty top for a 494 beacon?  I need the lens housing and the lens housing bracket.  I have a repro lens housing, but I don't like it because it is larger in diameter than an original, and the green lens is too light in color and the red is too dark.  I think I saw repros that are like the original, but I can't remember where I saw them.  I would like an original top, but I could live with a reproduction.  I would appreciate any info.

Hello Jim-  look up the Train Tender or Dr.Tinker on the web. One of them should have the proper Beacon Top for you. Take Care.

Keith,

Once again thanks for the help!  I saw that Dr. Tinker has the part, but the minimum order is about $39.  Right now, I don't need that many parts.  I might try the Train Tender, Brasseurs, or Stan Orr, I haven't decided yet.  I found an original on ebay this past Sunday, and I got caught up in a bidding war.  I put $25 for my maximum, but someone came in during the final minutes and got it for $26.  That ruined my day!  Thanks again for the help!

Jim you may also want to try:  Olsen's

http://www.olsenstoytrainparts.com/  They do not have a minimum order.

Mitch,

Does Olsen's still  have a $25 minimum order.  I have been told that orders under $25 can't be called in.  Not to mention the attitude I sometimes got from the owner and his daughter...

Hi Jim!    Jeff at the Train Tender is very helpful & has no attitude as well. You should give him a try. Also, the current CTT has a list of parts suppliers. Hope this helps. Take Care.

Keith,

I was on Jeff's site, and he has a picture of the repro tops in his photo album.  The top he has is exactly what I am looking for.  Thanks again.

I am not sure about the $25 miniumum.  I thought my order was less than that.  I know I called to add on something and they asked that I send a check instead of using a credit card due to fees being so expensive for them.

I ordered the complete top from Jeff Kane ( The Train Tender).  I wish all parts dealers were like Jeff.  Outstanding person to do business with.
