Stop the berating.
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 10, 2003 9:48 PM
If there's one thing that makes my blood boil is when one person puts down another for not choosing the same size trains. Has it ever occurred to the former that the latter's needs may be different. Maybe it's space, finances, coordination, or whatever. Whether it's in jest or all out seriousness, STOP IT!!!
You're only hurting the person thereby turning them off to the hobby. It also results in the hobby getting a bad reputation. Instead, give them a hand. The size may be different, But the methodology is the same. For example, I'm an O Gauger. However, Two of my coworkers model in HO and N. I try to let them know of any new products or shows that might be of interest to them. In fact, I sold some of my HO's to the HO railroader because he will be able to put them to good use. The point is, Help your fellow modelers regardless of facet. Don't aleinate.

Thank you for allowing me to vent.

Yes guys [:)] I agree. Everyone needs to get along in all the forums. Instead of insulting someone whos models a different scale, learn to appreciate the hard work and time they have devoted to "their" scale. And allow them to do the same for your layout. Sizes may not be the same but the general ideas behind them are. So share comments that may be helpful to others even if their scale is different. Trade ideas. Lend a helping hand where and if you can. Don't criticize, compliment.

While I of course agree that no one should berate anyone for any reason, I have to agree with Bob in that I haven't seen any of that occur on this forum.

All I've ever seen is a reply to such a post indicating that the poster might have better luck posting on another forum where more people who model in that scale congregate. This sounds rather helpful to me, since, if you don't know the answer, you're at least pointing them to a place where they're more likely to get it.

I of course, agree. I like it here because no such mindless bickering exists (yet). If you'd care to see the bickering, go to the OGR forum where the people there act WORSE than children. They argue about TWO rail Vs. THREE rail for heaven sake!

But I do have to say that HO does not use the same "methodology" as O. O is AC and HO is DC. I switched to O for these reasons:

1) My hands are too big to work on HO scale anything.
2) HO's DC wiring left me cold, wondering how to do everything, especially reversing loops.
3) HO is usually associated with "prototypicalness." I like to PLAY with my trains and not spend so much time with details. My three year old loves to put his toys on the cars and ride them around. Perfect for Lionel!
4) I purchased an Athearn HO engine and had to attach the hand rails with GOO. What a mess. I like how O scale is already built.

Sorry about that. Instead of methodology, I should have used the word,"basics" as in. While the sizes and current requirements may be different, most of the "basics" are the same.

Years ago, I had N scale. When you combine an 8 year old with small trains, the you know what is going to hit the fan. My father barred me from going near them. That was when he introduced me to Lionel O/O27. As my skills improved, I went to HO.

About 10 years ago, I returned to Lionel. Today, I still cannot handle N scale to save my life. Come to think of it, I really cannot handle HO anymore either.

I brought in some white metal toy trains to the local shop last night. I kiddingly refered to them as "Prototypical Models". At first I was a little worred about that comment, after they saw that they where really toys they all had a smerk. Most of the people Ive met in this hobby have a loose relaxed atmosphere around them, BUT there are the die hards. Its like that in all hobbies! Im still trying to figure out my love hate relationship with Ho & O Lionel :)
Have fun whith whatever you can afford!!

I Agree I belong to a club that has both O gauge and HO Gauge and I Do both of them so i understand i have gotten greif from people about it but i dont care. My thought is that its a hooby and if you want that gauge what ever it may be you have a right and no one can change it.

Unless the scale is 12":1' AND making money in revenue service, it's a toy :-D
