I think I would just as soon have the set without the boxes.  After spending that much money I think they would be safer in a barn than just a box.  Obviously, these are proto units right, 1:1 scale.

Humm, I would rather buy a nice house for that money.. It's a way however to wash your dirty cash, who else would spend such amounts of money on one single toy train?

I saw this set mentioned on the Yahoo Forum. What a price,  but what a beautiful pre-war set....  Not sure if it would fit in my budget....

OK, I can dream can't I?  I think that if I had bid that high on anything that did not have my wife's prior approval, my wife would be collecting on the insurance  Short of a museum, I can't think of anyone who would be able to do this piece justice.

Oddly I've seen this set on a action advertisement in the october CTT, telling it was the only BOXED prewar set of that kind.. I didn't know the price of cardboard did rise that much the past few years..

The actual selling price is bad enuff, now add in the "Buyer's Premium" and the possibility of sales tax and it rapidly approaches $300,000.

Whoever bought it probably wanted it badly  and has more money than he can spend in his lifetime so why not? Why sit on money in the bank for your heirs to blow? Considering the bid war, it's likely to hold its value anyway.

I would LOVE to see this train set being used!  Imagine this, whoever bought it is away on business buying guns or whatever and the maids little boy left free to wander around, finds it sitting on a desk and opens the boxes out of curiousity. Mr Hood comes home to find it being pushed across the parquet floor and ends up showing the lad how to run it properly on rails. He ends up being transformed into a decent human being through the magic of trains, marries the maid and they all live happily ever after.

A quarter million? Thats peanuts for the magic that train could do in the right hands.
