I did not read all the replies, But I think at 38 soon to be 39 I'm still a kid at heart. And sharing trains with my 8 yr. old boy and 3 yr. old daughter ?? Well do the math am I young enough ??????

Well right now I'm not experinced enough to build the levels, I have a bunkbed, 2 dressers, a good sized toy box and a desk which I have part of my layout going under, and I don't think that my dad would be too happy if I put in more shelving. Though my dad and I are making plans for a table for my layout.
Thanks any way. I'll keep the Ideas in mind when I'm expanding it.

There is no real chatroom. we just post back and forth right here. It's not technically a chat room per se, just a special place for younger modelers to get together and keep the hobby alive and well. As for your space/room dilemma, someone may have an idea. Have you considered two levels, one on top of the other? Or if you have the money, make a layout on shelving if you don't want to suspend it from the ceiling.

Ok I have two things in mind 1. is the chat room on this web site or is it on another? 2. I have 2 engines 7 items of rolling stock 11 paper buildings and a 26.75 X 19 in. 1000 piece puzzle of a Union Pacific Big Boy. All in my room. My layout takes up a good part of my room. And it's a misshaped oval with 2 sidings. I don't have any trees, grass, etc on it and only 4 telephone poles. Is there any way to expand my layout with out having to hang it from my ceiling? or building an extention to my parent's house?[?][:(]

I have stuff from all the big ones L,MTH, Weaver, Williams, KMT, Riverossi, Marx, TaylorMadeTrucks, RMT, Atlas, Industrial Rail, Bachmann On30, and even some Fly-by-night Knock off toy store trains that are battery powered but can run on O track.

In the past year or so the one company that got my attention most was K-line. I really love the Shay,Superstreets, Porter, Plymouth(esp. the 19th cent. ore cars that came with some of these), and the reefers. I am sad to see them go. They were doing some really interesting things at the end. I am a bit conflicted that the company that killed them now owns them. Above all I am tired of the backbiteing and courtroom conflict and This Co. is better than this other. It is boring.

My sincerest wish for you all to have a Happy Easter. Celebrate with your family and friends and RUN TRAINS. I'll be hauling some synthetic grass and plastic eggs and a stuffed bunny or two for my daughter (almost 2).

If I weren't in the middle of moving, I'd have the layout decked-out for Easter. As it is, it's the bare minimum as most of it is already packed.

PS Anybody have a wish list of items they'd like to pick up this year? I want to try one of those inexpensive Beeps and a Stanta Fe (is it an FA-2/warbonnet?) ...you know the standard red/silver one. Why am I the only one who can't identify train types? Anway, an FA-2/warbonnet and a coal car or two.

How about you guys?

i have mostly lionel, i just like those best. i have a few scattered MTH and k-line. i'm really starting to get inot williams. i picked up the 2056 hudson a few months ago and i'm pretty sure i'm going to but the new GG1. the price for williams is fantastic for the quality you are getting

I run what I want. True, I started out with LIonel when I was 10 years old, but then when I gotten my first MTH freight car, I now had another choice in what manufactuer I could choose from.

And now that I recently found out about Atlas O cars and engines, I am going to be getting them too. So yeah, I will buy things from any company as long as they make the stuff I would be interested in. I can care less what others think as far as what I should buy or stick with because since they are not paying for my train items, then I dont have to worry what they think either.

For you younger guys, do you run mostly Lionel or do you run other stuff?

I ask this because I felt pressured to buy ONLY Lionel when I entered the hobby. It's what the older guys had as kids, and they pushed it hard on me. They also said that only Lionel is really investment grade--you'll get more of your money out some day. My fist set as a kid was a Lionel (after I returned the HO set my parents bought for me) My first set as an adult was an MTH--I loved it.

Now I run all kinds of trains from all kinds of makers and tend to ignore those who rip anything but Lionel...BUT I DO LOVE LIONEL.

How about you guys???

PS Has anyone gotten to the Area 51 layout and seen it yet? Please tell me if you have. There have been problems with people seeing the site.

The Area 51 train is fun. Now there are about 6 add on cars to go with it. Three of them are in the curent Lionel catalog. I would love to see pictures of a layout built around this train. If anyone has picsthey can post I'd love to see them.

Leave it to those Germans to do some incredible things. Click through the photo albums. The one of America is awesome. Imagine adding YOUR trains to their scenery. This site has definitely given me some ideas.

I never called you or anyone here a "loser". I was only telling my experience here when I showed some pictures of a project of mine that were a bit different than other work I've seen here. I am just saying that it seems that there are some perameters that are placed on what is accepted as acceptable "toy trains". Those perameters may be a limitation if a wider audience for the hobby among younger people is desired.

When I was a child there were still some interesting to children mass marketed Lionel sets at toy stores(like the L.A.S.E.R. or the Black Cave Flyer and in HO the Tyco Turbotrains). There are not any anymore in these accessable stores. The last of these offerings I remember at a big store was the Safari and the Constuction sets in 1998 at Toys Are Us. The Constuction set was what brought me back into this hobby. Without this type of offering it seems it would be harder to re-introduce younger people back to the hobby later on.

Anyway I thought this area was ment for younger hobbiests. 1950 is just as alien to me as 1910 is to you. I wasn't around.

FYI the era I research is 1910 - 1930. I am trying to make a model of a shortline logging railroad in upstate New York.
