SOPRANOS and TOY TRAINS!
Posted by laz 57 on Sunday, March 12, 2006 9:26 PM
HI GIZ,
Just got done watching the SOPRANOS on HBO. They had two parts of toy trains, the first showing TONY S. brother in law running a LIONEL 0-8-0 Boston and Albany switcher with TMCC. The Bro-in law had a hat on and all. He was in the garage and had a decent size layout with all the trimmings. Hope they show more of the layout in weeks to come.
You got to love it GIZ, our hobby on one of the top rated shows, this is GREAT for us.

Hey Laz,
I mentioned this in the coffee pot, about some information on the layout. I know that Doug sent me some pictures of it being put together and some of the production work and cast. I know it was a great experience for them. If you want, I can send you some of what Doug sent me.

Loved the layout. Had a Hellgate bridge. The episode was full of product placement. Cingular phones, Lionel trains, and Nesquick (camera focused on one of the milk cars). Good to see Lionel in such a prominant show. I wi***hey didn't make the guy look like such a weeney though. And what was he doing, pouring smoke fluid on the layout? Cleaning track? Glueing something down? I couldn't tell what that bottle was. Lousy episode after being away for 2 years. If it weren't for Meadow's little dance number for Finn, I'd have given it a thumbs down.

VH1 did a show recently called I Love Toys. Lionel trains were number 26 all time. Everyone had fond memories of them, but almost everyone made fun of guys with layouts in their basements. On tv, if you like toy trains, you are considered a dork.

the "trainstation" www.train-station.com in New Jersey put out an email to those who bid at their auctions a couple days before the show. It has about 8 pictures you can link to in order to view a pretty nice laylout they built...

i have the link....hope it works http://www.train-station.com/cgi-local/auction.cgi?action=newbid&item=1000

what to do with the link now is still a mystery to me.

Laz,
I got a message from Doug and he says they hope to have the trains in future episodes, but the way the movie business goes, they see how it plays with the audience. Perhaps if we could give them (the Sopranos show people/HBO) some good words, maybe we will see some more of it.
As for pictures etc, if you go to the main page, they put up a direct link to the photos and information. www.TheTrain-Station.com.

Assuming that T survives his gunshot from Junior, he should have plenty of time to visit and play with trains.

Did I read the Trainstation website correctly that they are going to auction the layout?

I second the idea that CTT should do a list and story on trains in movies and TV shows. I purchase off the newstand and that one would be a must buy! I did a list with help from fellow forumites a while ago so it can be a start.

The USA Network aired an episode of The Dead Zone that starts with Johnny Smith holding a Lionel 1960's era Set and Locomotive. Johnny rescues an illegal immigrant's baby. Through the Show, when Johnny holds the baby, he has flashes of the future where they are running the train layout together. At the end he finds the baby's father and gives him the O Gauge Caboose.

There are episode guides for The Dead Zone that can tell everyone the exact name and airdate.

Laz,

I gotta start watchin tv again. I thought for a moment that the sopranos were some hot chic singers. But my coworkers said it was some type of mafia show. And to imagine toy trains mixed in!? Well I guess ole blue eyes, aka chairman of the board, dabled in toy trains as well; I gotta get with it, man!

Chicago Hope had several episodes where Mandy Patinkin was operating Lionel Trains in the Office of his Doctor charachter. It was his idea.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show on ABC had an episode where Ellen confronts her father in front of his Lionel Train Layout.

I will never forget the two absolutely black comedy movies "The Addams Family" and "Nothing But Trouble" that both had Lionel Trains.

The Family Channel remake of the "The Addams Family" had Lionel Trains. Specifically several of the Santa Fe Steam Sets.

Many Excellent Motion Pictures had trains and railroads in them:

Groundhog's Day.
The Pittsburgh Weatherman, Phil drives on the tracks while evading the police and a Burlington Northern SD40-2 Diesel-Electric Locomotive.

Back to the Future Part III
Doc Brown and Marty McFly take over a Steam Locomotive to propell the DeLorean Back to the Future.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The Red Line Trolley System is being closed down by the owner of Cloverleaf, the nasty Judge Doom, portrayed by Christopher Lloyd.

A River Runs Through It.
The Brothers run across a Trestle as a Northern Pacific freight train rushes out of a tunnel.

Dennis the Menace
In the opening scene there is a freight trains that brings an evil, dirty vagrant to town, portrayed by Cristopher Lloyd. It was actually a G Gauge Toy Train!

The CBS series Early Edition was filmed in Chicago. There were always real CTA trains and real METRA trains in almost every single episode of Early Edition.

New York Subways are in almost too many movies to count!

It would be easier to count Lionel trains on TV and Movies.

Will anyone at LIONEL mention this appearance in The Inside Track newsletter?

They mentioned the Garfield the Cat movie as having Lionel trains, but they will most likely not mention the HBO series The Sopranos.

It reminds of the time that Showtime or HBO once had a free viewing and they aired the documentary of the reunion of "Neil Young and Crazy Horse". Neil was wearing his LIONEL TRAINS T-Shirt and spouting obcenities at the band for messing up their performance. That was perfectly surreal, the operator of Lionel displaying backstage behavior contrary to the public image of LIONEL.

Does anyone remember that Classic Toy Trains ran an article about the Spike Lee Joint movie "The Clockers". That was a tough movie. Spike featured Lionel Trains on an unusual Desert layout.
