Did I read the article right? He low-balled the guy that brought it into his store, said it wasn't worth anything other than for parts, and now is listing it on eBay for $50,000?

When I first read the email, I too had thoughts of maybe he low balled the guy, but, not knowing this shop owner, I give him the benefit of the doubt, especially since it seems his shop, based on his discription, deals more in the smaller scales. I also don't believe he thinks the piece is worth $50,000 but just listed it at that amount to get some attention (it worked). According to what I was told on another forum, it seems to be a common practice for dealers to list "high priced" items in eBay when eBay runs their $0.10 listing sale (any listing no matter what the price can be listed for a cost of $0.10) to generate some interest .

PZ : yes, that's the way I read it too, but he said he took it home or to his work bench & then made those discoveries. In otherwords he is saying he thought it was junk at first, too, then got to probing into it & thought it may be some thing more valuable. I think that could happen to a lot of us sometimes !

That VoltAmp was impressive. A great piece, but with two children under 4 years, it would be difficult to have such a item as I would fear little hands. Anyway, congrats to the guy who did get it.

I'm with Sask. Whoever got that Voltamp got a gem and a bargain. I've seen Voltamp in much worse condition go for much more. As for changing tank car colors - just dip in RIT dye and you can have any color you want.

I didn't notice the lack of couplers initially. My reaction would be that the trucks are turned around backwards, preventing us from seeing the couplers, but you could very well be right in that they aren't there. It wouldn't surprise me.

I noticed that too. At first, I couldn't believe it. Then looked at the other auctions where the seller described the type of trucks. Probably part of the "rare modification" that produced the color also produced the lack of any remains or evidence of couplers. Frame doesn't look quite right to me either, but I can't figure out what's wrong.

Lionel Turbine: As others have said, with no proof that it is an actual prototype, I seriously doubt that they'll get any takers at that price. I wonder if it really is a Lionel prototype, though. I wi***hey'd say how they came to obtain this engine in the first place.

Voltamp Streetcar: Wow! I'm drooling!

Pink 6465: "Rare", along with "vintage", is the most abused word on ebay. I had to laugh at his also using the phrase, "If you are an early toy train collector then you know these don't surface very often in this good of condition and with such vibrant colors" in his description of a very dull and well-used 6465.

I wonder what they did in order to change the colour like that. There was a CTT article about variations on postwar Lionel hopper cars some years ago. In it, it showed some 6456 LV hopper cars in unusual colours and mentioned that before Lionel made the girls' set, they considered producing trains in "fashion colours" and these were prototypes to see how that would turn out. This tank car looks like it would fit in with them nicely, although I'm sure that it's just a custom somebody did and not some rare Lionel-produced item.

Well. If i had that i would sell it for maybe 3 grand. What would raise the price is it isprobably the only one made. And it isnt on record. for 50 grand is, well, not, not the price it should be. Also he or she should prove it even works.
I forgot. You could buy 25 Acelas Instead. wich any one would rather do.
