$300 - Rebuild PW F3 or Modern Era F3?

I have a some left over $ from my tax return - and I want another F3 to be a runner. Would you rebuild a set of junker 2343's - add railsounds and cab restoration by Len. Or would you put up a set of Like New but ran 18191 Western Pacific F3's PWC's. What would you do?

I would take the $300, find another $300, and buy something you really want. My advise,
If in doubt, do without, save your money till you know what you want to do.

I had the Northern Pacfic A&B units from the 1990s & the sound is just terrific. The Post War stuff gets boring after a while, TO ME, but with sound & all the bells & whistles, & things you can do, I'd say go for the good stuff !! You can turn on a bell at engine walking speed & blow the horn even while the bell is on, see the rear light come on by itself, hit the crew talk, a lot more to be fascinated with & if there are little ones around, their attention span gets a little longer ! You have to decide yourself, though. Most guys with the TMCC & DCS systems are not crying the blues & worried about the stuff going to break & fixing them down the road, or worried about parts,or saying they wi***hey never got those. They are enjoying all the bells & whistles, as I am again !! [:D][:D] My [2c]
Thanks,

Hello FEC ! I would think that you might be better off to buy a like new Western Pacific F3 as they already have all of the electronics in them for TMCC & Railsounds. If you buy a junker, You may have to spend more than what the engine is worth or what you cannot afford which would not be good or make your wife happy at all. Go for the Like New units. Take Care.

I had planned on upgrading a number of my engines, inclueding a 2343 Santa Fe set, however, I don't think it is such a good idea. I am going to go ahead and save and invest in the newer stock. I purchased the railsounds cars, and have found that the novelty of the sound that they provide is not to bad. (Looks a bit peculiar on a passenger train). But then ran a newer TMCC, and so much better.

And more importantly the details on the newer stock is improved, especially looking at MTH. (cab doors open on the diesels, and more)

Just my opion....
