This is only my opinion, so for what its worth.
It sounds like you run 0-27 stock. Is the MTH loco Premier or Railking? In any event, I have seen an MTH Big Boy run on an 0-72 curve layout over 30 feet long. It is a large loco and the tremendous overhang in the curves turned me off. For a 4X8 layout, I would prefer running a switcher in steam or small diesel switcher. I did have a 5 X 9 layout and ran an MTH PRR consolidation. I had one siding and a reversing loop. I had plenty of fun with that until I had a mental lapse and created the layout I now have. I like to make saw dust. Let us know what you decide and good luck.
