Williams Horn
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 9:45 AM
I've just picked up a Williams U33C with the true blast horn and bell. The horn is so quiet it's barely audible. Is there a battery in the fuel tank on this engine or is there a volume adjustement? I haven't really gotten to look at it closely yet, in fact, the engine was only run for a couple of minutes last night. Also, how do you get the bell to operate? I assume I need another switch.

No battery, sound from the speaker bounces off the plastic of the body.If you take the body off,the horn sound sounds very weak.

Call Williams. Their number is on their webpage. Some horns are louder
than others.

To be honest, the sound effects are the only down side to a Williams loco. They are pre-recorded so you can't make a horn or a whistle blast as long as you wish. Also, the ones I've heard sound "recorded" if you know what I mean. They don't seem to have that robustness.

There is a small white potentiometer on the circuit board. I set mine to max and its loud enough in the train room but barely audible when I ran it on the club layout in a big hall.

I'll give the adjustment a try. The horn is so quiet you can barely here it while the train is sitting still, much less moving. In my opinion, the actual sound of the horn isn't as offensive as my old Lionel Dash 8 40C. That thing has the harshest sounding, most unrealistic buzzer of a horn I've ever heard. How difficult would it be to rig up some type of protosound system in these engines?
