Protosound 2.0 upgrades
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 10, 2005 4:42 PM
Hi, has anyone done an upgrade with the Protosound 2.0 kits from MTH, at 25.00 for the kit it sounds like a winner. Allso can the sound eprom from a Protosound board be used in a Protosound 2.0 board.
Thanks, Toastyp

No, the boards are completely different.

I'm not aware of a PS-2 kit that goes for $25.00. FYI, the replacement boards for a PS-2 system list at $200.

"Upgrade your engine to Proto-Sound 2! The collectors asked for it, M.T.H. delivers.

Each kit consists of a Proto-Sound 2.0 circuit board, 2 coil wound Proto-Couplers, various wire harnesses, new speaker, new rechargeable batteries, new mounting brackets, and headlight and backup light bulbs. The kits are warranted for 90 days when installed by a participating M.T.H. Authorized Service Center. Each kit will require programming of a sound set prior to operation. The sound sets can be downloaded from the M.T.H. website at no charge but will require the DCS system in order to be uploaded into the upgraded locomotive.

Current M.T.H. Railroaders Club members, log-in to the club portion of the website to receive a 15% discount.

The Diesel Upgrade Kits are currently in stock."

Check at the MTH web site, not the Protosound site, the diesel kits are listed for 25.00!

Try here, I ordered 4 last week and just ordered 3 more at 25.00 each. The steam kits are listed for 179.00!

Well, that's quite a deal. Coil couplers usually run about $8-$10 each so that would mean speaker/battery/board/harness are only $15? Maybe it was supposed to be $125? Hope it's not a misprint!

Did you get any yet? I saw the price of $25 on the link you provided, and then did a search for that item number 50-1902 and it came up the link I posted at $179.00. I think the $25 is a mistake just wondering if they honored that price?

I hope you are ready for a $1250+ credit card bill. That $179 price is correct for diesel sets as well. I would call MTH for your order status.

So far all you have gotten is an automated computer reply. I have a feeling that things will change once a real person sees the order but let us know what happens. I'll gladly pay $100 each for any extra kits you might want to sell.

When I looked up the price of the diesel kit via the mth club store, this is what you see.

"The price for current M.T.H Railroaders Club members is $149.95, plus shipping. A deposit of $25.00 per kit will be charged when an order is placed. The balance will be charged at the time of shipment."

Be very careful with purchasing those kits, i think it's a typo on the site that will cost you much more than the $25 currently posted.
If I am wrong, please let us know because I will purchase a few kits myself.

I am not a member of the MTH club so I can't go to that area. I have double checked the pages displayed when you go to the shopping page and select Proto2 upgrades and it says nothing about the 25.00 being a deposit. A local Chicago TV station ran a segment on air fares that were listed in error with mistakes as far as the prices go and the airlines had to support the fair listed until the mistake was corrected. Some one got a round trip for only 2.00!
I guess its just wait and see.

I think it has been fixed. I don't see any $25.00 kits on these links. I knew I should have ordered some.

Yes, they have corrected the web page to show 179.00 for the diesel upgrade kits. I guess its wait and see what they do next since they have billed my credit card for the kits at 25.00 per kit.

The $25 was a deposit; because, they have been out of stock.  They are supposed to be back in stock this month.  The MTH club website has been down forever and won't be back up for 6 mths per their IT department.  I joined the club this year; but, they are experiencing problems.

I'll email the lady and ask her how to get the 15% discount at checkout if you are a club member.

MTH responded to my email rather quickly.  The lady that downloads the orders from their web portal will check to see if you are a member.  If you are, they will apply the 15% discount to the order, which makes it $152 and some change.

I have installed 5 kits in Aristo-Craft "G Gauge" locomotives.  MTH Club price $149, when you place the order, if it is not in stock, it shows a $25 deposit.

1. They  work great.  MTH PS2 is a Receiver, a Transmitter, a Computer, and a "closed loop" Motor Control.

2. A lot of time and care is required.   The kit includes both PC boards, two remote coil couplers, all wiring harnesses, all new light bulbs, and instructions.

3. You must download the control and sound files from the MTH Web Site (free).   To install it in the locomotive you also will need to install the "Loader fIle" (also free) on your computer.

4. You WILL need a anti-static mat (Radio Shack $25), small hand tools, electrical tape, a small drill for mounting holes.

5. To know what your getting into, download the 40 page upgrade installation manual from the MTH web site (Free) now, another copy comes with the kit.

good luck
