Army units and toy trains quiz
Posted by FJ and G on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 10:54 AM
Perhaps your favorite railroad in your toy train collection is depicted in some way by these active U.S. Army units.

Starting with the first picture, left top logo going clockwise, can you identify the Army unit AND the railroad whose logo is similar? There are 14 logos so number your answers.

I'll provide the answers but I'm getting hungry for some leftover turkey I grilled the other day so you'll have to wait an hour or 2 for the answers. Go ahead and try, if you can!

(don't say I've got too much time on my hands b/c I work for the Army so these logos are in my line of work!)

Roy,

Great stab.

Sorry I didn't post this on Memorial Day.

1a Missouri Pacific (eagle); the diamond could be Reading or older IC

1b 45th Infantry Brigade

2a NYC lightning stripe

2b 78th Division

3a NYC lightning stripe and the arrowhead portion could be DM&I

3b 25th infantry Division

4a NYC lightning stripe

4b 155th Armored Brigade

5a PRR

5b 28th Infantry Division

6a B&M's old Patriot or D&H shield

6b 7th Army Reserve Command

7a Northern Pacific's yin-yang

7b 29th Infantry Division

8a Southern Pacific's house of the rising sun

8b 41st Infantry Brigade

9a CNJ

9b 77th Readiness Support Command

10a AT&SF's Chief or D&H shield, or the star was used by a fallen flag RR that goes thru Texas, the name escapes me

10b 2nd Infantry Division

11a NYO&W

11b 89th Readiness Support Command

12a DM&I

12b 71st Airborne Brigade

13a NS horse or D&H shield

13b 11th Armored Cavalry

14a I've seen this before on a RR but the name escapes me. It's from the Chicago area

14b III Corps

There are lots of other Army units that match railroads but I've got some other things to do at the moment

Thanks FJ and G. I am not having an easy time researching this topic. Some sidetracks lead to interesting information. Such as:
http://www.us-army-info.com/pages/mos/transportation/88u.html
http://www.hnd.usace.army.mil/techinfo/ti/850-02.pdf
The second link is an Air Force Technical Instruction for railroad design and rehabilitation. (It is 2MByte, so if you use a phone line be patient.) TI 850-02 is so interesting, I forgot what I was looking for on the intenet.

Oh yes, I found the first one...

The 45th Infantry Division was ordered to liberate the Dachau concentration camp. They arrived a Dachau on April 29, 1945. Ironic considering that their symbol had looked like a swastika just six years earlier.
