I saw a funny story on the drudge report today. It's about how trains in the UK were actually faster in the age of steam than they are today.

Well, with all of the cruise controlls and electronics in the toy trains today, I guess we can run our trains slower now....just like the Brits.

TPL,

The same is true for Amtrak (except for the NE corridor). Also, 60 years ago, you could take the train to about 100 times more locations than today and ride under steam or diesel power. Some passenger train windows even opened. Try opening the window on an Amtrak train.

I fantasize about travelling by train everywhere, with acceptable time tables, first class service and reliability. Will not happen in my lifetime or anytime in the forseeable future, re: money and population base. Until gas goes to $10.00 a gallon we will continute to enjoy the autonomy that cars give us.
