What Was The Last Locomotive Produced By Lionel In The USA?

Does anyone know the model and date it was produced? What's it selling for on ebay and elsewhere?

I'm pretty sure that it was a model of a Nickle Plate Berkshire. I don't know any mroe, though, but I'm sure many others will have more information to add.

I believe that the last model that Lionel produced in America was a special version of the 773 Hudson. This Hudson was identical to the 1950 version in appearance with the slide valve guide on the steam chests and without the wedge between the headlight and support bracket. It also came with TMCC, wireless teather, and railsounds. Lionel offered a limited number of these engines to Lionel dealers only. I can't remember exactly what year it was, maybe the 2001, but they are a high dollar item on e-bay.

I think you're right about the 773 Hudson and the year it was produced. This was documented in a past issue of CTT, but I don't recall which one.

I could be wrong, but I believe Lionel told/promised its customers that the last locomotive to be produced here would be the Berk, but then they messed over folks by later giving that distinction to the Hudson. Roger or one of the other guys at CTT will know for sure, and will likely respond here.

Lionel said that their last made in US engine was a Berkshire and I believe that was the title I used when I reviewed it. I heard they were selling some re-painted Vanderbilts later, but they were from an earlier run. The Berk came with a signed certificate of authenticity and a very dumb looking backhead to hide the motor.

I think the Hudson (6-38051 if I recall?) was made from left over Century Club Hudson parts. Perhaps the Berk was the last "made from scratch" engine made in the USA, the Hudson was last assembled, and the Red and Blue Vanderbilts were last painted.

I am pretty sure I recall Lionel defending the Berk as last made in USA when the Hudson topic became known.
