handle w/care

or, better yet, handle with TENDER loving care.

I never try to single out or pick on any particular mfgr (you all are guilty [:)]) but I had a interesting moment the other day.

I gently picked up a Weaver TOFC car and as I did, my hand brushed the handbrake, knocking it off and then the thing that holds up the tractor trailer 5th wheel (I think it's called that) also came off.

It is a simple matter to glue these back on, but for certain pieces of rolling stock, I've learned to handle them better; esp. the scale stuff with lots of detail that seems to be barely hanging on.

On a different note, if it weren't for the low prices of Weaver rolling stock, I wouldn't be able to afford any scale stuff at all.

Like many of you, I mix scale and semi-scale.

-----------------

That reminds me, I've got to call MTH, because I haven't received anything from them yet reg my club membership I purchased several weeks ago. Looking forward to getting their scale Santa Fe box car.

Some mass produced products are like that. I think that some of the workers might be more concerned sometimes about when their next break is or what time that they go home than how much glue to put on a part. [:p]

With Atlas and some of the other high-detail rolling stock and equipment it does not take much to knock-off delicate detail parts. To us who are used to the sturdy(yet less detailed)Lionel equipment of the post-war era some adjustment to the way we handle our equipment is in order.Sometimes lifting a new box car out of its styrofoam cradle can result in damage!Locomotives require special care and I always lift a steam engine by grabbing the steam chest and the tender trucks to avoid damage.Under no circumstances will I grab a loco by it's boiler!Sometimes I think it is best just to leave a high-detail engine or car on the track.

With many, but not all, locomotives and rolling stock items, the best way to remove them from their boxes is to take 'em into the bedroom and dump 'em out on the bed. Carry them in two hands, with one hand underneath to support the weight and with the other hand on a sturdy area on the top of the piece to steady the item while it's being moved.
