Would you pay $42K for a Lionel dummy crane?
Posted by FJ and G on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 10:43 AM
I realize that "Lionel" is the most desirable name in toy trains and that adds value to the product, but $42K for a dummy crane?

Here's the deal. I'll build a crane car just like the one on page 26 of CTT (May05) and motorize it and sell for half price of $21K.

Hope it's OK to advertise here.

I think the person paying 42K is the dummy and not the crane. [;)]

Is" IT" gold plated ????
I'm not a collector like some of you all,but Geeze, that's worth as much as my house.
For that price it had better do more than just be a 'dummy'.[xx(]

I might have a bridge to sell for a couple of bucks.[:D]

I'm not sure if my entire collection is worth $42K, and I have over a thousand pieces. I wouldn't pay that kind of money for an automobile, let alone a single train. I find that obscene.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Easy come, easy go?

In somewhat of a defense of the dummy, I mean the guy who bought the dummy crane, there are some wealthy people who spend more on a diamond ring.

At least the dummy crane has some use, as supposedly it rolls down the tracks, although the crane is nonfunctional. Also, it likely has about 100 years of natural weathering that is of inestimable value.

Well, that's "collecting". A brass protoype to the 1937 Hudson which used to adorn Mr. Cowen's desk sold at Stout for $70,000. Would i buy it? No. Would i buy it if I had $20 million, hmmm.

I've attended quite a few live auctions and have always enjoyed see great trains and some interesting people. Not unusual to see a guy pack his $10,000 train set in a 1983 K-car.

Not judging anyone. I', just easily amused. :-)

I really don't think that it is so ridiculous, but then again, I'm a collector and have the collector mentality. How many of those cranes do you think are still around? Any Lionel items from that time period are extremely rare, but this is even harder to find. I have to admit that even I was a bit surprised that it went that high. Buy, hey, all you need is two people who desperately want something at an auction for an item's price to skyrocket. I like Tim's comment about the guy with the $10,000 train set getting into his 1983 K-Car. This is just discretionary spending. These people spend money on what they think is important. Quite frankly, I think that spending $70,000 on a Lionel 700E prototype is much more sensible than paying $200 for a pair of designer jeans. When you look at the ridiculous things that people waste money on, toy trains are something much more worthwhile.

Would I buy the crane for $42,000? Only if I was a millionaire. Otherwise, for $42,000, I could get many more very nice and (not quite as, but still) rare antique toy trains.
