M10000
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 20, 2005 10:45 PM
I just got a set from eBay and he has another listed now: MTH RAIL KING UNION PACIFIC M10000 SET PROTO-SOUND 2.0 Item number: 5958544150

I'm new and wonder if these are relatively scarce, and also the scarcity of Pioneer Zephyr and Blue Comet sets... I'm guessing these are among the most wanted prewar and prewar-toy-inspired sets...right?

I've seen these trains pop up in different places - what I find interesting, H.C., is how relative the value of particular trains are to different individuals. Something of little value or interest to one hobbyist is a 'must-have' to another. And the Internet gives us a bigger forum to search for and unload this stuff. Some of this relative popularity also has to do with cost - for example, the new Lionel Zephyr is prohibitively expensive for me but a wonderful affordable model for someone else.

HC,

As I think you realize, the RK set is not a pre-war repro, but a better representation of the actual train. You are correct that the pre-war sets are very desireable. I do not think the modern versions are that rare.

The best modern M10000 model in my opinion is the Lionel Century Club II version, a very scale and detailed model with fantastic sounds and smoke.
