Does anyone know if the 480-18 horshoe clip will work for the NTC-1 coupler truck on the 2466 tender?
Thanks,Dep
Virginian Railroad
The 480-18 clip is what the service manual calls for to retain the trucks on the 2466W tender.
I am servicing a 2466W tender presently, and am using the 480-18 clips satisfactorily.

Hmmmm...I looked in my service manual and couldn't find anything on what clips to use. I asked the E-Bay seller and he said he wasn't sure. I am gonna shoot an e-mail to Brasseur and see what they say. They are pretty good at answering these types of questions. Anyway, thanks for your reply.
Gee Larry sometimes it's a waste of time to answer a question.
If it's the horseshoe clip I'm thinking it is, only about 99% of lionel trucks that take a horseshoe clip use it.

Geez...sometimes I don't think it's worth asking a question on the forum, when people who aren't even in the discussion feel compelled to pipe-in with nothing of value. Fact is, and I found this out from Brasseur, this truck can take two different clips...the 480-18 and a c-clip, 3662-36. Maybe some folks should have that "first cup of coffee" before visiting the forum...just sayin'. My whole purpose in asking was these clips are for sale on E-Bay and they are a bit pricey. Just didn't want to drop a lot of $$ on something that doesn't fit.
While I appreciate Larry's reply, I am also a firm believer in "trust, but verify".

But guess my comment was consider not being part of the discussion. still if your not going to accept the answer you get why ask. I feel this is a fair question. Most on here are super knoweledgeble of what they answer to. Perfect senireo for you. Say you own a shop and someone comes in and ask you a question and you give them a valuble answer, and they turn around and say think I'm going to ask Joe down the road. How would you feel. If your going to do it don't say it, It gives people the feeling gee why did I even try and help the person. A lot of us are seeing this more and more on the forums and are answering less and less because people doing just what you did.
When Olsens website comes back online, the document showing the 480-18 clip on the truck will be posted.
Those clips will both work the same but the 480-18 $4.00 for 20 has to be pinched to the post the 3662-36 $4.50 for 12 does not. E-bay prices. Both work. They are both pretty cheap. You can also get the 3662-36 style at most hardware stores for even less.

The 3662-36 ring is common hardware. Techanically known as a "side-mount external retaining ring", also known as a e-ring. It is intended to be used on 3/16" diameter shafts with a groove 0.147" in diameter and 0.028" wide. The ring has an OD of 0.335" and thickness of 0.025". It is a hardware store item and can be purchased from McMaster Carr as their part number 98408A126 for $5.26 for 25 rings plus postage. It is interchangeable with 671M-22 e-ring and 480-18 horse shoe washer. I believe the difference between the 671M-22 and the 3662-36 is material and finish. Dimensionally they are identical.
If you goto ttender.com he has them for $0.20 each ( 480-18 ) or if you buy 25 there $0.12 each so if you buy the 25 it's only $3 plus shipping.

Thanks! Good info here. Of my two hardware stores, one had none of the horseshoe clips, the other only had one size...too big. C-Clips they had in stock. Was gonna bring one along and match it up. This info makes bringing one along unnecessary. The ones I bought on E-Bay, the horsehoe clips cost $9.95 for 25, free shipping. The C-clips cost $4.50 for 12 plus $3.95 shipping. So $8.45. Not sure what the c-clips cost at Ace Hardware. Hopefully less.
I had no intention of getting into a confrontation over this. WAY too small to argue about. But the comment "Most on here are super knoweledgeble of what they answer to" made me chuckle. How exactly am I supposed to know who is and isn't knowlegeable? I don't do that "assume" thing. I verify. It's the most reliable way to make sure I don't have to go back twice for the same chore.

Many regular participants start to recongnize fellow posters and get an idea of their fellow posters' areas of expertise. In addition, many participants here also participate on other boards. So there is more than one place to look. Had the original respondant given incorrect information, you can bet your boots that someone else would have jumped in and given a second opinion. As far as buying Lionel parts on EBay goes: There are some good parts vendors on EBay, but in general it is less expensive to buy parts direct from the Lionel parts vendors because they don't have to pay EBay commissions and the buyer can batch orders to save on shipping. (Of course there are exceptions). Train Tender has discounted bulk pricing on many common parts, including both e-clips and horse shoe washers. I think his minimum order quantity for the discount is 25 on each of these items. I buy mine by the hundred. I am positive the horse shoe washers are 10 cents each when purchased by the 100. You'd have to check on the others.
The 671M-22 E-rings are Truarc 5133-18. That is right from the factory documentation.
Let's all just take a deep breath and remember this is supposed to be fun. Check out the link from Olsen's. First item for the 2466W tender is the 480-18.

Just as Train Larry wrote in the first response in this thread.

And if I had acted on incorrect information, I would have wasted both time and money. Sorry, but I stick by my "trust, but verify". Maybe the forum bosses might want to put a little mark next to those who are considered reliable sources, for those who don't spend their lives on the forum. Just a thought. BTW...of the two attaching options, I much prefer the C-clips over the horshoe clips.
If the information was incorrect, someone would have posted in a matter of hours, not days. Burn those bridges!
Enough about the stupid clip.
