LW transformer diode installation
Posted by Mikestrains on Thursday, March 23, 2017 10:07 PM

Hi everyone, I recently picked up an LW transformer and need to replace the whistle rectifier.  I am ordering a 10A10 silicone diode axial type.  From what I can see there are two wires on the old rectifier, one on each side from it mounted on the bracket.  So the first question is, will I use these for the new silicone diode as mentioned in an earlier post, opposite Lionel's schematic of diode direction?  Now the second question is if I ordered a stud diode, how would that connect, wire wise?

I don't know my way around inside a KW, but I can tell you that a stud diode usually has a picture of the schematic symbol printed on it, like this one:

On this diode, the body is the cathode, corresponding to the ring on a lead-mounted diode, and the solder terminal is the anode.  The diodes on the old Lionel schematics are indeed shown backwards.

(It's "silicon", the element, not "silicone", which is a kind of silicon chemical compound.)
