Good morning all,

I usually do not go after high dollar items unless it is something I really really want and I have the money for it.   The last example was an IVES 1772 gondola, which was a Lionel 512 with an IVES nameplate and number.   The 512 normally goes for $40 or $50 (or less).  The 1772 was a bit more.  Sometimes I have to be patient.   Always liked the BN 1552 set and finally found one at a good price at a TCA meet.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

...And at that price it may have been over bid...

But with a second price Vickery auction like eBay, it takes two bidders within one increment to get the closing up so high.

Got to agree,

And at that price it may have been over bid as I don’t see any of this stuff going up at the rate us old and true blue guys are kicking off.
The Greenberg guides don’t cut it today. E-bay killed their so-called ideas.
It would be nice to know how old the winning bidder is.  Laugh

Never mind what anyone thinks, what does Greenberg's guide say about how much it's worth?

The days of Greenberg guides being relevant are long over.

Hmm... it's actually worth $267.00 + shipping as of the end of this auction. Nevermind what Greenberg's guide says about how much it's worth.

I knew boxes were valuable, but geez!  Laugh

P.S.  I'm certainly aware of what "rare" trains are, and I can only say that I don't buy them because I'll destroy their rarity the second I put them on the rails.  Wink

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile

Anyone who thinks he's going to get five G's for that pink monstrosity....

Well, he should mention whatever it is he's drinking so we can all buy a bottle and feel good.

It is nuts looking at things on E-bay. Just look up a post war 3650 and the prices are all over the place.

JWB as long as I don't break the CTT rules I can write what I want. And nobodys name was mentioned.

STOP trying to bait me, I'm getting tired of it. This is not OGR.

I have learned not to knock what other people like because I don't want them to knock what I like.

Yes, it's amazing how many people worry about how others spend their money, or what they enjoy.

There are dummies willing to pay so get all you can.

Nothing like a little name calling, huh?
I got news for you, 90 percent of the general public thinks that any adult that plays with trains (model railroading) has something seriously wrong with them.

I'm very tempted to say "Let's keep it that way, who needs the competition for the goodies out there?"

Hey, back when I was collecting guns I paid a bit more than I should have on some pieces reasoning "Well OK, it's a bit more than it should be, but not too much, and in a few years it'll be there anyway."   So I went ahead and bought the piece.

Considering how the prices on the ones I liked have escalated to the heart-attack range now I'm glad I did.

So, any way you look at it it's a judgement call.

I have one car thats rare that I paid more than I normally would because I needed it to complete a set. Other wise probably wouldn't have gave it a second look. But I did watch and search for a while to get it at a decent price. ( got lucky had it listed wrong and most were not bidding on it. ) I do have a few rare cars that I got mixed with other things that no one caught but thats mainly how I come across them.

To each his own, but you know how many real Baby Ruth's I could get for $245?

Hey, I'm not planning to bid on it. While I am aware of the car, it really does not interest me. Nor does it bother me that some other people are.

One could also buy between 24 and 50 of the 2454 Baby Ruth cars.

I'd probably enjoy them more too!  By the way, my father call's 'em "Babe Ruth" bars, they weren't fooling him when he was a kid!

I'll give you a candy-themed good score I had.  Several years back we were at the DC Big Flea Market in Chantilly VA.  I went into one booth and saw a K-Line Hershey Train set, complete.  No price on it so I asked the exhibitor "How much?"

"Is $85 OK with you?"  he asked.  "Let me think about it" I said. I turned to leave the booth and thought to myself  "DUMMY! WHAT IS THERE TO THINK ABOUT?"

No, I did not rip my pants getting the wallet out, and the Hershey Train comes out of hibernation once a year as part of the "Sugar High Express" under the Christmas tree.

Well the doors certainly look like the painted metal doors I have on my X2454 but I agree it's not easy to tell. The X2454 I have predates this car and has solenoid couplers. I only paid 4 bucks for mine! Smile, Wink & Grin

No offense, but your x2454 Baby Ruth boxcar is extremely common. The 6454 Baby Ruth isn't.
