Remove smoke unit from lionel 675
Posted by bossman on Thursday, December 8, 2016 6:41 PM

Hi again. Removing the smoke unit from my 675 has me stumped. I removed the motor, but just cannot figure out how to get the smoke unit out. Any help will be appreciated.

,Hello Bossman,

I recently rebuilt 2 smoke units in 2025's, which is nearly identical to 675.

I recall the smoke unit being attached to the steam chest -pilot assembly.

You will need to remove the lead truck, then the 2 screws for the steam chest-pilot casting. The smoke unit is attached to this.

Also, when you re-assemble, the smoke unit crank is held in place and pivots in a notch between the steam chest, and the boiler casting. It sometimes feels like it would require more fingers than a human would normally have, but be patient. I was successful by setting it in my lap, upside down, to hold the loco, and working the steam chest back into the boiler, while checking that the crank is not binding.

Patience , and work carefully.

The job is easier if you remove the side rods that go to the steam chest and the cross head guides. Then the steam chest can be lifted straight off (after it's mounting screws are removed).
