Can this be hooked up to fixed voltage via #3 terminal on operating track, or only trsck power. Manual makes no mention of fixed voltage.

Since your "497" appears to work with an uncoupling track, I am guessing that it is one of the modern era reissues. IMHO, it would be better to provide the item number for an accurate answer. The original Postwar Lionel 497 had built-in contact blades, it did not use an uncoupling track.

I dont have a part number. Its the modern reissue in the 90s.

If you have the 6-14107 coaling station, then the service literature gives instructions how to wire it to a separate transformer. Scroll to 2nd page, lower left corner, 1st paragraph.

Hooked fixed voltage to the #3 wire. Works perfect off fixed voltage now. Not the best accessory design. Unload doors should drop down a bit more for easier unloading. Fun accesor though!
