Ballast ??
Posted by KRM on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 1:17 PM

I am starting to ballast the rest of my layout. On the addition I used spray on WS glue to hold the ballast. Is it needed?? Do all of use glue on ballast or do some of you not use glue?

Tks,

Kev.

Kevin I don't have glue on my short section I did to see how it looks well I think some has drifted but as a whole I think it stays fine. Now my layout is on flat boards no elevation so they may differ from you. but for the flat it might work fine. I have no plans to glue any I do as I have said I hope to move in 5-6 years so this way get a new vacuum bag in vacuum and suck it all up and hopefully re-use it. lol

I use 1/2 and 1/2 plain ole white glue and water. It will dry clear and removes easy if you want to change something at a later time. Wet the ballast with a spray bottle of water, some like to add a drop of liquid dish soap, then apply the glue with an eye dropper. It's best to mix what you need and make a fresh batch next time.

I used basically the same formula that SJ has provided.  It works very well and dry's rock hard.

The ballast I used was bought at the local elevator, Chicken Grit and in our opinion it looks awesome, very natural.  Adding the ballast is like adding the frosting to a cake plus it's really easy Thumbs Up
