Trains of MY Youth, what catalog was this in?
Posted by jscola30 on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 11:56 PM

So this past year, I've been getting reunited sorta speak with my Lionel and other O gauge trains, as well as with the catalogs and back issues of CTT. One of the sets I got for my birthday one year was the 7-21902 Heavy Duty Construction Zone set. It was a low-end set with a lightweight, forward only RS3 and 3 gons, as well as various small accessories (signs, plastic vehicles, etc.). I don't remember what year I got it, but doing some research, it appears this came out in 1999, however I don't see it in any of the 1999 catalogs (or the 1998 or 2000 ones). Also doing research, I came across a flyer for it, but separate from any catalog. Was this item formally cataloged and it's right in front of my face and I don't see it or did this flyer do the only advertising?

Good evening all,

It was not cataloged.  I think it was made for a retail chain (maybe Toys R Us).  It was a very low end set.  I am not sure, but it may have a DC can motor with a rectifier for AC to go only forward.   Lionel made a cataloged N&W small steam set about the same time.  If you have a DC power pack, you can cut some wires to bypass the rectifier and run forward and reverse with DC.   You have no neutral, but I do not think there were any lights on either set.  Every time people complain about what Lionel makes, they should remember such oddities as these.

Very interesting, thank you! If it's the same N&W set you're talking about, I have that too, a small die cast, forward only 0-4-0, slope back tender, C&O gondola, and small Lionel Lines bobber caboose. Both sets do have lights. I remember though, my dad got the construction set at Charles Ro, not at a toy store, maybe Charles Ro bought some or the toy stores sold them to Charles Ro. I think they retailed at that time for 89.99 or something like that, yes very low end. But I like both sets a lot, even if maybe that's all sentimental. I'm ok with forward only, my layout is very small, 3x3, I'd only do any kind of reverse running if it was a push pull commuter type (which would probably require larger 036 curves at least). Now Lionel is doing the remote control sets for their low end, I'm interested in getting the Chatanooga set, because Chatanooga Choo Choo is my favorite train song.

I had a new, old stock example of that Construction Zone set stashed away. This last christmas, one of my son's coworkers was looking for a christmas tree set, so it went to him.

Came home early after spending about 5 hours in ER at work today as had the dizzyness ( not spining light headedness) the DR. thinks I might have a inner ear infection but not sure as couldn't see that far but if it gets worst come back if it persist more than 7 days go see my DR. mean time gave me rest of today and tomorrow off and I'm off monday so just taking it easy. Still if I get up moving around I get light headed. Oh well

Well did get the 2359 back together correctly and with the new front end and discovered the bad E-Unit wasn't a bad E-unit after all the middle wire to the motor was off it was close enough to look like it was there but I bumped it and then saw it was loose so resoldered it and the the one to the left as it was barely still on and checked the right one but it was still good. So now it works fine. I did get the other Exploding boxcar as the set came with red top and ends and white sides well I got the white ends and top now also with red sides. I also have the other version of Exploding boxcar in all red may pick up the all white sometime. Will see. I picked up a coal ramp with the N&W opperating coal hopper and the controller for it ( which normally is missing from the set) Not sure if I will use it or resell it as it takes a lot of realestate but it was a great price so couldn't turn it down.

Not much else going on.

Fife still thinking and talking to upstaires about your friend it those deaths that get me the most as the good guy was trying to make things better for the area. But I also know he agreed to pay the ultimate price if need be and I'm sure he will get the most blessing for that. As do my fellow brothers and sisters trying to protect our freedom.

Well need to go regroup talk to you all later.
