Like RT. I been working on the railroad. Trying out different track configurations for the addition. Smile

I do have a question on curve pitch I will ask in another thread.  Hmm

Nice start RT, keep us posted on your progress

Frank53,  Its hard to find words of congratulations and admiration that match the work that you have done on your railroad.  I feel as if I know the history of the businesses and the town.  Your work sets the standard for others.  Excellent job.

Winter Frolic 2013

Every year in February we have a celebration of winter here in town.  In Wisconsin there isn't much you can do about winter except celebrate it.  This year the old guys have had plenty to talk about down at the coffee shop.  The weather has been so erratic with snow and then warm temps and melting and then snow again that the organizers of the Winter Frolic have considered canceling it altogether.  The old guys have even started taking wagers about it.

Once again Nils Jameson has come to the rescue.  He decided to help out by providing another attraction, other than winter weather and winter sports, to draw folks to town.  Nils made contact with the Mid Continent Railroad Museum down at Baraboo Wisconsin (also the home of Circus World Museum) and made arrangements to have them loan one of their steam engines and a consist of passenger cars to the organizers  The idea is to take folks on excursions further north into the old resort areas and enjoy the view of the northwoods.   He also negotiated with the board of directors of American Flyer Lines to have the antique steamer make connections with other trains to bring folks to town from places like Milwaukee, Chicago and Madison.  The topic of conversation among the old guys of course was which one of the trains at the museum would be selected.

Well we found out this week when the museum sent the Winter Frolic Special on a trial run.  All of the folks at the coffee shop could hear the sound of the unfamiliar whistle in the distance.  I jumped in my car and headed south of town to see if I could intercept it.  Of course I had my Kodak Brownie with me.

I caught up with the Winter Frolic Special at a commuter station south of town very close to Nil's mansion - Thymely Manor

.

It turns out that the Winter Frolic Special is one of the venerable old locomotives from the Ives RailRoad Lines and a matched set of coaches.  I had only heard about this train and never actually seen it.  It is a new aquisition for the Museum.

I followed the train for a while and caught a few more shots.

She looked pretty nice as she pulled into the station.

According to the crew she performed flawlessly.  Not bad for an engine built in the early 1930's.  So the trial run was a success and even if we don't get enough snow visitors will have something to enjoy. - We have gotten plenty of snow and cold temperatures since these photos were taken.

I hope you will consider coming to visit during the Winter Frolic and ride the Ives RailRoad Winter Frolic Special.

I decided I needed some exterior facilities to dress up my factory.  After looking at a number of HO tank farms kits, and deciding I didn't want to pay that kind of price, I set about building my own.  For those of you who may be interested in what the large white storage tower is made from, you can find one in the plumbing supply aisle at the hardware store.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

Putting your layout that close to the fireplace  makes it pretty easy  for Santa to leave  trains for you. Big Smile

We bought this house thinking it would be nice to have a fireplace but later found out the previous owner had some non licensee person to build the room. also built wrong so only way to use it and not get smoked out is to push it all the way to the back do that and all heat goes up chimney so worthless

I will be cutting a access spot so I can its only going to be 13 1/2 feet wide and 8 feet deep so I figure one acess about the 4 foot area going wide will give me access to about everything its also only 32" high.

Also worst case I can come up in the fireplace lol

Here are some before cleanup and after cleanup pictures of the #610 switcher I got recently.  I've still got work to do on the hand rails and steps - I think a good polish and a gun bluing kit should do the job.

As received:

After a warm water and mild soap bath, contact cleaner rinse of the running gear and fresh lube:

One of the gang at our mall layout bought three locomotives that were in almost identical condition to this switcher that 8ntruck has shared. I followed the same approach you did. Two are now shiny and bright and clean and lube and running. I am woring on an N&W Geep now.

I spray the rusty areas with WD-40 and then scrub with toothpicks which seem to rub must of the rust away, then I scrub with oil saturated 400 grit sand paper and then rub with paper towels.  Usually at this point it is more stain than rust. Gun Blu helps to reduce that effect even more.

There is one other thing I do with shells and that is spray down and wipe down with Armorall. It gives an immediate vibrant and bright shine that is superficial of course, but Armorall has those polymers which seem to magically heal plastic, and even the paint to some extent (the oxidation seems to diminish).  Once the excess is wiped away I usually have a much cleaner and brighter car body to enjoy.

Yep, me too. I built my layout strong enough to support my weight. So I could reach all points by crawling onto the table. Now that I can't, I have a shorter reach than I need to get to the far corners. Too late to complain about it now.

By the way, Frank53, you have a beautiful layout. Love that tubular track. Wink

Chief, I am surprised, a good southerner like you using a toothbrush? What are you thinking??? I thought toothbrushes were illegal in NC and y’all use Polident or nothing. Whistling
