This past Christmas, I was given a pair of prewar Lionel 529 passenger cars. I couldn't leave them alone of course, so I bought a 248 engine and 530 passenger car to complete the set! It's in need of restoration, but I at least have it working so far.
I already have all the new parts I need from The Train Tender to completely restore this set, but I won't be making much progress until it's warm enough to paint. The engine's motor is in especially good shape though, and after replacing nothing more than the pickup roller assembly, it's an excellent runner! Smooth and quiet, and the original wheels are in excellent condition. So I can at least have a nice running set for now, and in a few months, I'll have a great looking set!
I found the 529 and 530 cars are the same as the 629 and 630 cars, so I'll be renumbering them to the red, cream and black 629 and 630 to match the engine (I personally like the red color better than the terra cotta). The cars aren't worth much anyway, so there won't be a loss of value from doing this.

You are a lucky man. When I restored my father's 252 set, all four of the locomotive wheels had disintegrated from the dreaded Zinc Rot. I wish you the enjoyment of your new-old set!
