Good morning guys, Clouds and sun with a chance of snow later. 34 Degrees
Daughter and grand daughter are on the way over to spend the night. I had to tell my friend Mark I could not work on the bench work for the layout addition today because of them coming over. Maybe we can do it next weekend. I need to get more waterproof paint for the basement walls up before we do it anyway. I can do that this week once the wifey goes back to work.
Brutus, Prayers for your son. believe me I have been there and done that with both my kids. Heck I kind of was distracted in high school too.
John, keep up on the clean up and it will be history before you know it. Prayers for your mom's speedy recovery.

Good morning. It's 40° with 100% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a chance of rain. The high will be 48°.It's cool and wet outside this morning and warm and toasty in here. There's a long slow rain falling, no thunder to speak of. Just the sound of raindrops on the over-roof.After my sign-off last night I got to work on a couple of locos. The end loco on the F unit Frankenloco trio started cutting out and was getting dragged. It has an old DZ125 decoder with short wires meaning it has additional wires added to extend those. That means multiple solder joints to check out. I found one that hadn't been soldered. The one the goes to the bottom of the motor. It was a simple job to clear any corrosion from the connection and solder it. That put it back in service. The other loco I worked on is another F unit, an F7A. A Bowser/Stewart body on an Athearn frame, Athearn trucks, Proto 2000 motor, blue box/hex drive hybrid drive shafts that I made for it and a custom made center weight that I made myself, not as heavy as an Athearn super weight but it gets the job done. I finished up around 3am. As a consequence I'm not feeling so great this morning.

Hudson I haven't heard and bet I don't but still feel I came out on top on this deal as a smoke unit will cost me about $15 with shipping. so I will have about #275 in it so I'm good with it it will greatly increase the value of my set now that I have the engine with original boxes even with the tender box in rough shape. I'm still thinking of getting a repo engine box maily for the insert.
Morning crew hows it going I'm back to work today yea.
Talk to you all later.

laz - Perhaps the Mayans had the same problems with their trains... Coincidence? I think not.
Hi GUYZ,
We had a MINNIE and MOMMY day yesterday. Took the gals to MINNIEs favorite pet store "That Pet Place", outside of Lancaster. She walked around the store like she owned it. Wanted to plaay with all the other dogs there. Picked out left over Christmas chews and treats and then away we went. Down to E town and a quick visit to BARRYs and I picked up a few pieces of fasttrack then all 3 of us went on a rails to trails walk on the Conewago Trail there. A nice 4 mile walk to end the day. As we were getting back to the car about a quarter mile out, we saw a beautiful 8 point buck and two does. Just to rub it into my face again. Oh well gonna go today again, maybe get lucky?
SPMAN, Graet story, now I need an OL MIL.
FIFE,
had the same thing happen to me last nite only with my ZW with the bricks. When I took apart old layout I hadn't remembered if I had all the channels on the TMCC 18 volts and could bring up each individual power handle with the remote. So I couldn't figure it out and had to refer to the book. Finally after fooling around with the blasted thing got it all working and now I can start all the wiring of the buildings and such.
Stay frosty my friends,

Mornig, stuck at work this sat AM Had 6 People with appointments and only 1 showed. What ever happened to when you commit to something you stuck to your comitment? I'm gonna have to start taking names and phone numbers so I can call these a$$holes when they dont show.
Every one thinks your to be at there mercy. Apparently, I am not permited to have a life out side of this place yet here I sit.
six months ago we started closing for lunch. Well apparently, I am not permitted to have a lunch, so the general public thinks. you should see how these people act when they come between 12 and 1 and were closed. If i ever figure out how to get the CCT images from our DVR to the computer and how to blur peoples faces out Ill post some of the better ones.
Places like Walmart have really screwed it up for the small bussiness. And Im not talking prices either. I am refering to things like "so you bought this Vacuum cleaner 6 months ago beat the p*ss out of it, left it in the rain and now you want to return it, Ok since were walmart we'll give you a FULL refund" And now consumers expect this from small bussiness that was here long before walmart was.
John Public "what do you mean your not open 24 hours? walmart is, why can't you be?"
END RANT edit: you have to understand how frustrating it is to run a small business. It cost me money just to open this place up evey day. and when people don't keep up there end of the deal it REALLY irratates me!!
Any way, gonna get outa here soon and go clean the layout room up so I can move onto other things.
Ryan
Good Mornin' Y'all From Warming Taxachusetts,
In these here parts 36H/23L are normal average temperatures for this time of year and that is what I will get today. May approach 50 later in the week. The snow is in hiding which is a good thing from a labor standpoint.
RT......JimmyT posted exactly what I exchanged with you. The 736 you picked up appears far better than the other one that seller had and far better than the others still offered on the open listings in that price range as well as some where the sellers were asking more. In fact, one of the ones in the $390 range looked like a poor respray!
IMHO, what you have to contend with to me is preferable on an almost 6 decade old Berk. The better boiler and tender cosmetics on yours is what caught my eye......just some cleanup and a bit of polish, along with your r&r, and you will have a super good looking and fine running postwar BERK which, if you choose to flip it, would probably get $150 more than what you paid for it. The mechanicals are fixable but the cosmetics are not, short of a repaint or touch ups. The boxes? I am not a box person because I get no pleasure out of them. You done good. Let it gol!!!!
Ryan.........I would suggest you start selling your autograph to fund more train purchases. Seriously, with that Senator involved, maybe the publicity and local consternation (jobs and hence votes) will affect some of the Senator's support for common sense relaxation on government over-regulation on your company and in your industry.
Banks......like you, we leave the Christmas decorations up until after the Epiphany. I am still watering the tree twice daily with one of those preservatives you put in the water that help the tree stay fresher longer......and the preservatives work!
Brutus......while your son's Math debacle may have you disappointed and worried, look at it this way, from a broader vantage point. He is an A-B student in the honors program; and he can overcome this when he decides to (with some nudging from you and Char). By the grace of God and with Char in the genetic equation, the brains are there but just not all of the drive (yet) and decision-making..... for Math anyway. Friends' bad influence? You may be on to something. But I would imagine he mostly hangs with kids he goes to class with in the honors program. No? To fit in better with his classmates, he will need to crank it up......peer pressure.
I went through this with my son who went from being a very disappointing D Freshman student to one who cranked out 8 consecutive HS semesters with nothing lower than a B and a 93-94% grade point average......over 4 years! Yes, we made him repeat Freshman year much to his disgust and anger! There is a trigger in the child's head somewhere. The trick as a parent is to find it and to pull it, easier said than done. Hang in there. But there is a relatively easy, non-confrontational, and self sustaining fix.
The most obvious and effective hammer to use on a teenaged boy? Girls and cars. It is difficult to get the former without the latter.
Solution: "Bs and wheels, son, and nothing lower. Anything lower, even in PE, and you are walking the whole next semester or until you get back to all Bs or higher. No exceptions." Make him help construct, sign, and date a contract to that effect, treating him more like an adult. You just might find that HE will take the initiative and HE will raise the red flag early with you if he is struggling and HE will ask for help (tutor, etc.). This approach worked on me, and later in life for me.
SubmmBob.........when I left the nest and started paying my own way (including night school for 5+ years with no Summers or semesters off), I got nothing lower than a B. Why? Because my company (tuition reimbursement program) reimbursed $0 for Cs or lower and 100% for Bs and above. Also, how am I supposed to tell my boss, whom I had been snowing all along about how smart and great I was, that I got bad grades the previous semester and was submitting nothing for reimbursement because I didn't cut it. Besides, I also needed gas money for my Corvette.
Later, gang!!!!
Jack

Mornin' boys. Sunny & 31 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Still haven't found my electrical problem on the layout. Been pulling up sections of track to try and isolate the problem.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....
It is a cold 19 degrees. Going up to 36 today with sunshine.
Today is an easy day. I have some chores to do and a house project to finish and then, I can relax and enjoy the day. Football playoff games on TV.
Dining car has arrived with Cheerios for Breakfast.
Y'all have a great Saturday.

Konbanwa,
I ran out of time to post last night. The wife and I went out to dinner (tonkatsu) and did some window shopping at the mall. By the time I settled the kids in for bed I was pretty beat as well. I spent the entire day inside today; about four hours doing schoolwork. I did watch most of the Cotton Bowl too. A&M beat the shorts off of OU. I got on the Tardis around lunchtime, but I was only able to stay for a minute.
Welcome Prairietype.
Thanks Kev, but I’m not the first one who had the idea. Your scenery is top-notch and your photos always look great to me.
Hudson John – Thanks for the offer, but sending fresh food is a no-go. Plus, it can take about two weeks sometimes for items to arrive from the States; I doubt it would be edible at that point.
Ryan – The layout is progressing nicely. Thanks for sharing photos in your thread.
I’ll pray for all of us in need.

Joe
Hello all
A relatively balmy 20 deg F out tonight. We are open for business and collecting photons.
PrairieType - thanks for the info on the 2-6-2's. Your rebuild project sounds like some of mine. I like a challenge.
Brutus - I did well in high school, but got burned out toward the end. Still managed to graduate 11th out of 350. That completely disappeared when I went to college though. Managed to bomb out of several classes over the years. Took a total of ten years w/ taking some time off and working and going to school part time. Things smoothed out toward the end where I had a goal in sight.
John - I always found that the engine heat on my volksies did ok as long as everything was hooked up. Better on the long haul than a short trip. I expect the Corvair to be about the same. I was impressed that GM added an electric fan to boost the air flow.
Jack - the gas heaters actually worked pretty well. Were common in VW's as well. They of course had maintenance issues and needed to be inspected regularly. As John said they did affect gas mileage, as much as 5 MPG I've been told. Having lived in Arizona for 3/4 of my life, I've never seen one. Believe it or not, early aircraft such as the DC-3 used similar heaters that burned aviation fuel inside the cabin
SPRay - you should definitely put all these stories down on paper (or disc) some day!
Got outbid on a Marx 1049 transformer, but found a way too good deal on a Marx 709 and 809, plus a 150W version of a Dongan transformer. The 809 is similar in style to the 1049, but 50 instead of 75W. I like 'em because they remind me of a locomotive brake stand. Now the 709 is about a basic as it gets. A metal box w/ a lever and a cord. The Dongan is interesting. Multiple taps for fixed and variable voltages. Apparently this company still makes industrial transformers.
The little Lionel 4060 does run the Marx 999 BTW. I guess it must be the electronic circuit breaker in the 25W model I have that it doesn't like. The 4060 was an AC/DC trans that was marketed in the '80s. Even w/ the original box they appear to be worth next to nothing. I guess I'll save it in case I ever put together an electric train set for someone's kid.

Good Evening...
Well, everything is ready for me to get those reports done...computer all put together and ready...4 boxes worth of surveys and account books at my disposal...et cetera....now me weekends are off!!....
I have a few things to fiddle with in the train room as well this weekend so I think I'll be rather busy in there..one being cleaning it up........my room looks more like a storage facility again....
Hiya guys - thought I posted last night, but guess I got distracted and.... Squirrel!
Oh hey, anyway - good deal anyway, RT - you will get that thing in good shape. Maybe he'll kick you a few bucks back on it? You have won a lot more than you lost on the deal either way.
Great pics, guys!
Well, my son failed his math class for last semester. Apparently not turning in the homework will really effect your grade, even if you do well on the tests? It's an honors class and he just can't seem to figure out what to do about this. All the talking does nothing as he knows he needs to do more. So - he will have to take a night class in math and/or hope that he passes 4 more semesters in his remaining 2.5 years of HS. He was always a straight A/B student up until the past 2 years and he's still in almost all honors classes - it's just not something I can understand I guess. I look at his friends and a few seem to be total losers to me, so maybe he is getting some bad info there? I just don't know. Prayers are more than welcomed as we work on a plan for success.
TARDIS is ready to fly - let's go!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
sir james IWe finally had a day of sunshine. it's 31 degrees now.

Did some wiring work on the layout today. Back when I rewired the blocks for DCC I ran feeders to all the blocks but one that was on the back side of the extension. Instead I had soldered the end joints of that blocks at either end of it. That worked great for quite a while but I guess the solder joints on the inside rail weren't as good as I thought. For a while it's been randomly cutting out. Pressing down on the area next to the track would restore contact for a couple of weeks or a month or two. It progressively got worse. The last week or so I've been feeding power to the inside rail of that back from the corresponding rail on a service track near it by attaching a clip lead to the inside rail of a spur on the troublesome section and put the other end of the lead on the rail on the good service track. That worked OK for the short term but it looked downright tacky. Today I drilled a hole next to the troublesome section and ran a feeder to it from the buss as I should have done in the first place.Well, that's it for today I guess. See y'all tomorrow, the first Saturday of the new year.
Its been a long 3 day week.
9:15 New Years evening a call came. Long story short a trip to exit 22 on I-68 ensued to pickup and return one of my men whose truck broke down. I made it to bed about 1:30 AM That set the tone for the rest of the week.
Spent a couple hours the 31st using Son's snowmobile to haul grandkids up the hill after sledding down Much fun was had by all
Finally caught up on the Pot
Bo & Prarietype Belated welcome
Brent Great news
RT & Jack youse guyz just might pull this off.
Like someone else said our decorations will be up and lit until after Epiphany. The tree will stay until the end of the month or till it looses too many needles. Warmer weather is predicted next week so I'll work evenings to get the outside stuff in
SP Ray keep up the stories. I luv em
RE Navyjack I too still think of him.

We finally had a day of sunshine. it's 31 degrees now.
Daughter and grandsons stayed long enough after bowling to help me put the Christmas stuff up up and away. Tomorrow morning it's off to help assemble the Modular layout for a show on Sunday. I know many in this hobby don't have a local shop to buy from and the evil bay is a good source IF your lucky. I can buy local so the bay is just a place for low cost items for me. My last buy was just to keep my PP active. I had some Butter Pecan but baniila is waiting for the thingy ride...S.J.

KRM rtraincollector I have no intention of returning it or filing a complaint just want to hear his story then leave correct feed back. This engine in in good shape and not falling apart all I had to do really is install 2 lead wires from middle pick-up. and put a piece of electrical tape under each pick-up as it was shorting against the truck no biggie took about 20 minutes most of the time was removing old wires as there twisted on and soldered. running fine now had it pulling 7 MTH scale Passenger cars and there not light. don't want to reply to my email period gets a flat out negative feed back simple other wise probably a neutral Now trying to figure out how to give a fair feed back as won an item and it was delivered but I never received it ( post office mess up) can't say it was just as described as never seen it. and I'm guessing I'm out $13.49 but thats not his fault. I got a refund from the guy and ordered post war power trucks. I had to spend a extra $27.00 but it will be a nice unit when I am done.

I had a similar situation when I bought my 2026 on ebay. Listing said that it was in good operating shape while the tender just needed some rewiring. Also said that it was repainted (and pretty badly to, I must add). However, I just wanted an engine that ran, and bought it for about $70.
What started to happen was that the tender was giving me fits. I had already replaced the original wiring with the crumbling insulation, but there seemed to be a bigger problem with the tender. Cleaned the pickup rollers, and it worked fine for a while. Then it started to give me fits again. This time, I'm suspecting a bad relay, so maybe while it worked fine for the seller, it decided to kick the bucket when I got it. Tried cleaning everything and lubing everything, even tried being light on the whistle button, but to no avail. Hence why I'm searching ebay for a new relay.

Good evening!
Finally got outbid on the two whistle relays. However, there was less than a day on the listing, and the campers are finally coming out, so I'm leaving the listing to them so they can fight over it. Besides, found a whistle relay with a buy it now option.
RT,
I was looking at the same 736 previously that you bought, and that one looked nicer than the other one that seller still has. I was going to get the remaining 736, but it looks beat for the price. Good luck getting help from the bay. All honest people get is screwed over on there IMO. The dishonest seller/buyer wins in most regards unfortunately.

Its funny, the town I live in is small, 2 whole red lights, you know every one knows every one . The wife and I went to the VFW for dinner last night, and you would have thought I was some sorta celebrity or some thing.....
Taking a rest from the layout tonight
rtraincollector Box for engine one flap missing no insert Box for caboose one side flap on the end that someone taped up the other end no flaps. Had to rewire the tender as shorting out due to old wires cracking and breaking. This comes from a Train store. If he tries to correct the situation will let you know. I have ordered a repo box for the tender already so that will be taken care of. but will keep original box as it always better to do so. Had to also loosen the top plate on tender as it was so tight it was hard for motor to turn. had to put one wheel back into socket on tender so I'm seeing when I get around to buying a smoke unit for the engine I will need to clean and lube everything also, for now its going into its boxes and into the set box will get pics of whole set and its boxes probably for SPF

Hey RT,
Here is some advice I got from a good E-Bay seller on what to and not to do in a case like yours. Sound familiar???
" Kev, first thing if you get it and its not right don't mess with it. Since you have theres a good chance your out as ebay will tell you to return it for a refund thats there solution but make sure you leave the idiot a negative feed back he can't do it to you as a buyer. but if he goes in and leaves a pos with derogatory remarks inform ebay normally they will delete it "
I think I got ya.
Good afternoon all,
I've been AWOL yesterday due to chores and car repairs. Took my 96 Honda Accord in for a new power steering fluid pump yesterday and got it back today. They did not have the part yesterday so they gave me a rental. I have spent a bundle on this car in the last year but most of it was normal wear and tear. It's still cheaper than buying a new one and this one only has about 119K miles on it. Just getting broken in for a Honda.
Prairie type, congas on the retirement and welcome back.
Cleaned out pool filter yesterday and notice the old elements are nearing need for replacement. Plastic pieces are getting brittle from age and things break off. Need to see who has replacement parts. The place where I bought it went out of business a few years ago.
D.Baker, hope you find something interesting at the train show. I might go to the TTOS meet in Arcadia on Sunday.
Was able to order a new passenger car truck for my MTH R.P.O. car from Midge at MTH yesterday. Total was almost $40 including shipping. Probably would have been as well off buying a used car on E Bay.
Brent, good luck on the logistics for your new addition.
Chief, get well!
Another tale from the rails: I was working a local freight train from West Colton, Calif. to El Centro, Calif, a town down near the Mexican border several years ago. I had made a switching move at Indio and was starting out again when I saw what looked like a pile of rags laying between the rails. It was night time and pitch dark. When I got closer, I realized it was a man so I made an emergency application of the brakes (big hole). I was not able to stop short of the guy but passed over him about half an engine length. The good news was that he was not hurt. Somehow he cleared everything and was somewhere between the fuel tank and the rear truck on the lead engine. The paramedics came and said the guy was passed out drunk. They had us inch the engine backwards because they could not get him out where he was. They tied him up with ropes so he would not flail around if he woke up. We got the engine off of him and he was taken by the paramedics. The next day they told us that he was fine and did not remember a thing except lying down somewhere to take a nap. That somewhere was right in the middle of the Southern Pacific main line at Indio, California. I hope the guy gave up drinking after that.

Good Afternnon Y'all From A Balmy 37 Degree Taxachusetts. What a difference a day makes, 30 degrees warmer than early yesterday morning.
Finished up another morning of torture at the dentist's office and was informed I need some R&R on one tooth. I booked the appointment for that. The staff must love me very much and miss seeing me.
Prarietype........a sincere but belated welcome to the POT. And more important, congratulations on your retirement!
Roy, Chief, MikeC, and RT.......hope all of you guys are recovering from the crud. I had two recent incidents with the same, once right around Thanksgiving and the next Christmas day. I don't envy you. Get well.
RT.........glad to hear your 736 arrived, but it sounds like you were not altogether happy with the seller about the description versus the delivered condition. You will make it right. Once you get it up to snuff, JimmyT and I will be glad to break it in for you on a rotating basis.
SJ.......I am usually the designated driver and pack mule on my Grammy Pammy's excursions out with the grandkids. You are lucky Granny doesn't get similar ideas.
LAZ......I need to check out that Avery neoprene coat like the one you got for Minnie. Maximus has hair, not fur, so dry and warm is the order of the day. I also need to jury rig some sort of hat to keep his ear tips protected from the cold. A "cut to fit" coat is just what the Doctor ordered with a Doberman.....they have deep chests and skinny waists and the "normal" sizes always fail to fit properly.
HudsonJohn........did your Mom realize you are an inexperienced, unbonded, unlicensed, and uninsured plumber? She probably figured the price was right on the leak repair.
SubmmBob.........the thought of that gasoline-fired car heater in the Corvair makes my hair stand on end!
Brent.......the problem with driving, especially greater distances with such a quick out and back, is time plus time off of work. But travel with little ones in the car works well. I can picture you changing a poopy diaper on an airplane. BTW.....a woman who travels light? No such animal!!!
JimmyT and Hudson John.........I will be placing my train order with you two for your York shopping trip!!!
Good afternoon!
Still leading bidder on the Lionel whistle relays. Also thinking about decorating an Athern HO combine kit that I have for the Lehigh Valley, and buying a conventional control Lionel diesel locomotive as a detailing project for the heck of it.
