Track compatibility
Posted by walker on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 9:07 PM

I have a layout that consists of all Lionel high rail and 022 switches. I want to add a rail yard and am thinking about using a Ross 4 way yard switch to conserve space. Can Ross be successfully mated with high rail? Ross switches use a separate operator. How difficult are these to install and operate?

Appreciate and help you may provide

If nobody here responds with some help, say by morning, try posting your question in the Classic Toy Train forum next door.  Those guys deal with your gauge all the time.  Good luck.

walker - Welcome

The answer to your question is 'yes' Ross sells adapter pins that allow you to mate their track system to many other track systems including Lionel. I have the 4-way switch you are referring to and if you decide to go that way you won't be disappointed, it is very smooth and durably built.

Thank you for the encouragement. What operators do you use? Were they difficult to install?

From what I can gather Ross Custom switches makes two styles of switches, one compatable with 031 and similar track, another more compatable with 027 track, the style for 27 track will need adapter pins and need to be shimmed under the switch base. The switch machines are either a DZ-1000 or a DZ-2500, the DZ-2500 is for use with TMCC or other command control set-ups.
