Lionel 634 traction tire
Posted by Mark202 on Saturday, September 8, 2012 12:56 PM

I picked up a Lionel 634 switcher (the 1965 version with metal plates for weight) at a garage sale, and the traction tire looks like it should be changed. I have a new one, but I don't see how I would get it on. I could cut the old one off, but haven't yet until I know how to replace it. How are traction tires like this put on?

Thanks, Mark

Some diesels you have to remove the truck side plates.  I don't have one of those to look at, so that's just a guess based on the general technique.

You can sneak it by the side plates using thin tools(dental type pick, eg.) and/or get the new one half on or better and turn the axle to assist with the rest of the way around.
