Konnichiwa,

I was unable to work out this morning as I had an early meeting to attend.  The weather was more tolerable today and the workday has flown by.  I will be departing the office shortly as I have finished all my tasks for today.  I was able to catch the Giants-Cowboys game this morning, and it was nice to see the Yankees finally win a game and Orioles lose one.

I understand all the reason folks have a Facebook page and the reasons some don’t; they are all valid.  My wife has a page, but I have not used it at all.  I certainly see how it can be used to keep in touch with people and reunite with old friends; however, I am a bit old fashioned and was hoping people would start writing letters again; although I would settle for a phone call as well.  I find it somewhat annoying when I run in to old friends who tell me to create a Facebook page so we can catch up.  Uh, why can’t you just call me?  Or email me?  I would think that if we were friends and they really wanted to catch up, a 10-minute phone call or two-page letter would not be that big of a deal.  That’s it for my Facebook rant.

LV 2089 – I recently purchased a new WBB LV 44-ton switcher and it runs fantastic.  I am very pleased with it and the price was incredible.

Brent – That’s a great story.

Sayonara,

Joe

Good Mornin' Y'all From Overcast and High 60s Muggy Taxachusetts,

Last night the wife complains how miserably humid it is in the house.  I get right on it, turn on the a/c, and the humidity falls off from 70% to a more comfortable 58% in short order.  The wife then complains she is cold.  I suggest  "Put on a fleece."  Then I shut up because the next thing she would think of would be to turn on the heat. Bang Head

Yesterday I continued my assault on the dump otherwise known as the basement (packed with accumulated junk).  Bagged up 7 large contractor bags of pure unadulterated crap and hauled them (hid them actually) to the side of the house for removal to the curb, trash pickup today.  Today is "shredder" day to start on the tons of more sensitive material that requires "de-identification."  I'll bet we have 20 years of useless bank statements, cancelled checks, and the like.  This project would be better served if I would spring for a dumpster. Slow and steady, under the radar, and I will get there.  If I get the wife involved, she'll want to save way too much stuff.  If it has long since been picked up by the trash guys, she won't know what she doesn't know.  Ignorance is bliss.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Bob.......the pictures you have posted over time of your work environment up on the mountain are beautiful. I never tire of them. Thumbs Up

FACEBOOK?  Plus Twitter, email, snail mail, voice mail, texting, and the phone.  Way too much info to keep up with, most of it useless stuff that is unimportant or trivial.  The consequence?  Buried in all of this stuff we communicate poorer, slower, and the truly important stuff gets short shrift, both on the receiving end and the sending end.  And we close out each day feeling stressed, that we may have missed something truly important.  That's my My 2 Cents

Brutus......was glad to hear you got that hole filled back up and "concreted."  Was beginning to think Char would reach the end of her rope with the basement project and use you as fill before she covered you over with Sacrete. Stick out tongue

JoeyD and AF53......horrors!!!!!!  Fife's and Brent's Orioles have run down the Yankers, as Laz would put it.  Wink

Jeff........ was good to hear you got the brakes squared away on the van.  It must have been a pain throwing an anchor out the window every time you came to a stop light or sign. Whistling  Hope your Mom is settling in.  I am sure she is not happy with her situation.  You are a good son. Thumbs Up

Lehigh.......gas prices here for 87 sit at $3.74 a gallon for the name brands.  The no-names, about the same.  I'll take the name brands to get the additives and keep the fuel injection system cleaner.

BOC........in this crowd, you certainly are "our type." Thumbs Up

Buckeye.....congrats on the successful cataract surgery.  Like a whole new world has been opened up.  My father-in-law loved it when the MIL got hers done.  She was horrified at all of the dirt she had been missing while doing her housecleaning, kept her occupied and out of his hair for weeks. Whistling

KEV........I had to laugh reading your story of cleaning the coils on the refrigerator.  If you pulled that sucker completely out of it's spot, you would be amazed at what you would find. Whistling

LAZ........to me carrying a cell phone is like carrying a .45.  You don't have to use it, but it gives you peace of mind knowing it is there just in case.  Smile, Wink & Grin

RaySP.......you are like me.  I like to use a couple of strategically placed box fans to cut down on A/C usage.  If the freakin' ceilings in my house weren't so low, I'd have more ceiling fans.  Even the ceiling huggers won't work for me. Bang Head

Brent.......glad to hear that the canine training is starting to work its magic on your sis and her pup.  The pup's social ease will improve along with the dog's confidence that the training instills, and so will the pup's trust in your sis, that she will take care of any incorrectly perceived "threats."  As your sis' confidence increases with what she is learning, that confidence will travel right down the leash with no words necessary; the dog will sense it.  The more others respect the dog's space and ignore the pup, the more comfortable the dog will become around people.  We train with a lot of people with the same problem.  One woman has a 20 month old female German Shepherd.  A month ago that dog would constantly hide behind her.  Now (four weeks, four group lessons, and some "homework") the dog is more relaxed and social around people, not so suspicious.  Hiding from the public along with one's dog or avoiding the very situations that make the dog uncomfortable only makes matters worse. Thumbs Up

Time to go get a refill.  Later, gang.

Good Morning!

Sure am glad I'm not working, the humidity is over 90%, even had muggy showers yesterday!  Same for today.  This weekend could get to 3 digits, hope the humidity drops!  (Have to work Sat & Sun, do get to go to a trains show Sat. Morning.)

OK, you all asked for a pictures of the layout I am working on.  Hope the pics make sense.  We all but finished the framing yesterday.  I was anxious to get that part done, and let Bob and his wife see how much room it will consume.  I don't think they realized how big it is going to be.  Bob, did lay a "string"  footprint to show a perspective, but I don't think it was realized.  I really wanted them to have time with it before a lot of labor is expended then find out it is a "no" go.  Currently I have 2 concerns, first is the exercise equipment (her), but it not used very frequently, (once every couple of years).  Second, not going to be room for viewing or other people in the room.  Believe me, the only "walking" areas are squeeze by's.  Bottom line it is their decisions, I provide limited comments/recommendations and will help implement their desires.

View of entry door.  All exercise equip is located just inside entry, and in front of layout. (to provide ease of accessiblity)  Equipment consists of Treadmill, Weight Machine, Eliptical, & Stationary Bike,  The white framing is the proposed layout.

Overview of layout, most of the modules are 4' wide.  So it will be pretty large.  Once the perspective is realized, the legs need to be squared up and secured.  Worked with Bob on accessibility issues, but sometimes a "visual" is more convincing.  Will have walk around access on 3 sides, but still leaves some reach concerns.

No layout work today, will stay at home and do some tweaking and mods on my layout.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Hello all

Woke up today to the sound of not just the alarm clock, but also the compressor popping off. A small release valve near the two-stage cylinder head was releasing air. Shut down the compressor and I have Grainger sending me some documentation to try and figure this out.

Almost cold here this morning. We are getting down into the 40's at night.

Facebook - I once tried to open an account. I was annoyed by all the questions so decided to have fun answering them. Then forgot the dumb password I made up. According to their records they think I a forty something woman named BobLaugh

Time to go find some breakfast and then sort out this compressor thing.

Great idea Don, let's them see the "actual size" before committing.  Best idea -- sell the unused exercise equipment and buy trains, seriously.

Aloha. Beautiful day here again. It would be a nice beach day if any were opened. Large parts of the local lawns are dead because of the drought. Already the landscapers are knocking on doors. With the kids in college, I'll wait 'til next year.  Happy the cataract surgery went so well, Buckeye!  Gas prices here are at least a buck more a gallon. Sigh. Re Facebook and these 'connecting' technologies in general, I'm glad you can all honor your personal preferences so civilly. I'm impressed with how some of these modern tools can knit friends and family closer together, as well as help manage some aspects of a complicated life.

Hey Guys!

Just checking in.  Weekend in Dover was fabulous.  Great times, MEGA horsepower, the Monster Mile, Dover AFB museum and food.....wonderful to be back with the club.  Next stop Memorial Day in Johnstown, PA.  I won the Hard Luck Award for the neon overheating 3X on the way to Dover.  Of course, it was fine going home Bang Head.  I was a passenger in a Plymouth SuperBird all weekend....still grinning!!!

Latest interview was yesterday.  Had to rent a car to make SURE I got there.  58 miles/1 hour one way.  I think it went ok, but we will find out tomorrow.  I already have a new/used car picked out.  Naturally, it is a MoPar!

RE: Face(less)Book....I use it to keep tabs on the Princess and communicate with friends and family.  2 nephews in the service (USNA & USA active duty), and cousins everywhere, it just is easier.  Plus I've found some long lost friends, female and male....Smile, Wink & Grin.  I watch what I post and limit who has access.

Brent - yep they grow up....FAST

Buckeye - Glad you can see again .... I refrain from any CHIEF commentary ..... Laugh

Don, interesting photos of Bob's train room.  If it were me, I'd get rid of that exercise equipment if it is only used every two years.  Maybe he could store it outside on a patio with covers to protect from weather.  The only exercise I get from my exercise bike is moving it out of my way.  Another thought is put the stuff under the layout if it were made high enough, then just bring it out when needed.

Forcast calls for thunderstorms all over the city and valleys today as well as the mountains.  Beleive it when I see it.

Took short walk this morning since air quality is better now.  Fire seems to be under control and I see no more smoke today.

Chief, are those fresh water stripers or salt water?  I know they are found in both places.  My brother claims those caught in salt water have a better taste.  I would guess that's true.

later,

Ray

Like my wife, Bob's wife would have a fit.....or worse.

Maybe he could store it outside on a patio with covers to protect from weather.

What wife is going to exercise where people can see her?  And in the CA heat no less while her husband is nice and cool in the air conditioned train room she "used to dominate."

The only exercise I get from my exercise bike is moving it out of my way.

My wife uses her exercise stuff for what it was intended even less than Bob's wife.  She hangs clothes on it and piles boxes of her stuff on it.

Another thought is put the stuff under the layout if it were made high enough,

.........to fit Bob's lifeless carcass...

then just bring it out when needed........

Been slaving away putting the Peerless tractor back together today and I am wiped! It runs but the tranny is on the way out. I don't expect it to last much longer. It's already screaming pretty loud. Replacing it will cost more than buying a new tractor so my father and I are waiting for small tractors to go on sale. My main stipulation on it is that I can operate it easily without having to modify it. It has to have a hand shift for forward and reverse, not that darned little bitty pedal you have to step down on. My fathers little MTD has that. I can't step on the darn thing without standing and course standing kills the engine. You also have to wait for it to come to a complete stop before reversing and you have to go through the first seven steps of the ballet in shutting down whatever can't be on when reversing. I disabled the more maddening safety features on his so it can be operated without it dying when you sneeze! For example, when it was new this is what had to be done to reverse. Come to complete stop. Disengage blades. Raise mower deck to lock position. Set throttle to half (what that had to do with anything I have NO idea but it would die if not throttled down to half). Step firmly on reverse pedal. That got old REAL FAST! After a bit of work on it all that needs to be done is stop, step on reverse pedal. The deck can be left where it is and it will mow in forward AND reverse and the throttle setting doesn't have to be changed. Stepping on that reverse pedal is a pain in the butt for me! I have to twist my leg around sideways and catch the end of the pedal with the side of my boot. Even then it's a hit and miss (mostly miss) proposition. That darn thing had to have been thought up by some bean counter who's also a contortionist. If my father gets another one with that on it I may have to consider marching him out in front of a firing squad. I've already told him that when he goes to look at any I'm going along to see that what he gets meets my criteria instead of his idea of what's best for his wallet. Who has to drive the dang thing? I DO!. And I don't expect it to be another small one like his. It has to be big and heavy enough to do the heavy work I been doing with the old one the past fifteen years. His little one just doesn't cut the mustard. Well, enough about that.

No layout work and I haven't even THOUGHT about running a train today. I'm gonna sleep good tonight.

Good Evening

Great day was had by all. Neighbour's layout was quite cooperative this afternoon...no incidents, accidents, laydowns occured.  We had a wonderful BBQ out back with ribs and such. Mind, chemo after effects tend to not make for much of an appetite....

Weatherwise we were supposed to have gotten thunderstorms and such...needless to say nothing of the sort happened here...

Got to 92 degrees today but nice and cool outside tonight. It is so nice to live where there is so little light pollution that you can look up and see the stars at night. Smile

I cut four of the five sections of yard today because the weather guessers are calling for rain tomorrow. Only the second time I have used the 72" finishing mower all year and the second time I have cut grass since early June. The job sure goes faster with the big mower than with the little 48" mower but I need them both because just too many trees around the house for the big guy.

Well the talking heads are in full swing on NBC tonight as if we can’t understand anything we listen to and the reality shows stink so maybe after a bath to clean off all of today’s dust I will look for the thingy. Whistling

It's 75 now, no rain today. Had a phone chat with Charlie and my friend Andy. We had some train talk and other family things. Something different tonight, granny blended banilla with chocolate milk so I drank my banilla tonight. I will be watching for the thingy...S.J.

Mostly sunny and low 80's here today.

KRM - I guess what worries me about brake fluid is the possibility of it leaving some sort of residue behind that will cause problems during the re-paint process.  The chances of this probably vary with the brand of brake fluid and the additive package that is in the brake fluid.  A little bit of something like silicone will make a big mess on a paint job.  For future reference, could you please send me a PM with the brand of brake fluid you've used?

All for now.
