year old Lionel GG1 mystery
Posted by msbsouthpaw on Friday, August 31, 2012 12:02 PM

I recently took my semi-scale GG1 out of it's box to get it ready for the Fall/Christmas season.  It's barely been run, and I lubricated and greased it before I put it away last year.  Now, it reverses direction when it hits the 5-rail operating track on my fastrack layout.  I have no idea what is going on.  Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?  This is the only engine I have that does this, as I ran two other engines on that fastrack and nothing of the sort happened.  Thanks folks, and have a great weekend.

Not really what you want for an answer but you could lock the E-unit in one direction but then I know on reverse.

Some how something is shorting to cause that. I would look real carefully and running the engine very slow as it goes over the track get down with the side of your head on the ground/table right there and see if you can see anything rub as it goes over the track.

I am not familar with fastrak. I assume the uncoupling track has the center rail interrupted by an uncoupling electromagnet.
Your engine might have an issue with one of it's center rail pcikup roller.

ok thanks for the reply.  I'm going to take a shot at looking at it the way you recommended.

I think you have a dirty wheel and roller problem. Clean them with a dremel wire brush and CRC electrical contact cleaner. I just had a 2025 do the same thing. Make sure too that the rollers are in proper alignment.

Be sure the pickup roller is not hitting one of the operating rails on the 5-rail section. If the 5-rail section is next to a curve, this could easily be the case.

I would do like RT said and lock the e unit in one position. I would also reclean and lube it. I have had the same issue with stuff that has been sitting for a little while.
