Wiring AF #670 Track Trip to a Whistling Billboard #566
Posted by bking on Friday, April 27, 2012 8:34 PM

I am having difficulty figuring out how to wire (for my 2-rail AF track), the #670 AF track clip so that the Whistling Billboard #566, blows through an isolated section of my lay-out.

I have tried a bunch of wiring combinations, without success and have a #707 track clip, if needed.

Thanks alot for your good help.

The AF book says the above can be done, but does not show how to hook-up the #566 with the #670 clip.

The #670 track trip gets connected across the connection of 2 tracks with a fibre insulating pin between them at the beginning of your insulated section. One terminal of the trip gets connected to the 15 volt post of the transformer. The other terminal of the trip gets connected to the billboard. The other wire from the billboard gets connected to the base post of the transformer. Make sure the track power clip is outside the insulated block.

Hi Larry - Thank you for helping me.

I have the 2 insulating pins on the variable power side of the track, not on the base post side. I hooked up the wires just as you described and it does not work with my "running like a top" 470 diesel going through the isolated section. I can hear the 670 clicking on and off as the diesel goes through. And the 566 whistle works great.

Should I move the 2 insulated fiber pins to the base post side of the track?

I have the 670 over one of the fiber pins and the other pin is located 5-6' away from the 670.

Or is there something wrong with the 670? Thanks alot. Bob

Bob,

Looking at a wiring diagram from the AF service manual shows the track power connections to the variable posts of the transformer are outside the insulated section. The #670 bridges the first fiber pin. One terminal of the #670 gets connected to the 15 volt terminal of the transformer. The other terminal gets connected to one terminal of the billboard. The other billboard terminal gets connected to the base terminal of the transformer. Since you hear the #670 click, that means it is closing properly. The 15 volts from the transformer should now flow in one terminal of the #670, out the other terminal, into one terminal of the billboard, out the other terminal of the billboard, and back to the base terminal of the transformer, completing the circuit. If this does not work, disconnect all wires to the #670, take the loco off the layout, power up the track, and move the train by hand across the #670 until you hear it click. Get an ohmmeter and check for continuity across both terminals of the #670. It should show close to 0 ohms, as it is a closed switch. If you get a large reading, or infinity, the switch is not closing, and is defective. If you do not have an ohmmeter, leave the #670 wired up, substitute a lamp post for the billboard, and run the train. The lamp should illuminate as the #670 closes. If it does not, the #670 may be defective.
