2321 Truck Casting
Posted by John Richardson on Thursday, March 29, 2012 12:20 PM

Hi,

I recently purchased a very nice 1954 2321, and it was very obvious it has never been apart, so I began the usual disassembly, cleaning and lube routine.  While cleaning one of the side trucks, I noticed a huge, goopy mass that I assumed was melted plastic or something similar where some of the spring and brake detail should have been.  After closer inspection, its part of the truck casting, painted and all.  Has anyone else seen this?  I would have assumed that the inspection process would have been a bit better, as it's pretty obvious.

No, I've never seen anything like that.  But obviously, this one slipped by Lionel quality control.  Maybe that's why the previous owner didn't want it any more.

If it were mine, I'd get a replacement sideframe and chalk it up to experience.
