" A Christmas Story " freight train consist
Posted by H1C2839 on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 3:23 PM

Does anyone out there happen to know what the consist ( Loco & Cars ) was for the steam freight train that was used in the show window of Higbee's Department Store at the start of the movie " A Christmas Story ".  The passenger sets were obvious, Hiawatha and M10000. Any info would be welcome.  Thank you for your attention.

Here's a ittle info on the freight consist when this question was asked about a year ago. So far I haven't seen any definitive detail on that particular consist.

Welcome aboard!  Welcome

I decided to look!  So, here's what I could see:

  1. Engine is a smoker, but not the Pennsy Turbine.  Probably a Berk considering the consist that followed it.  (A bit too much for a 2037!  Laugh)
  2. Whistle tender like the 6400 type.
  3. Car #1 could be a cattle car or a tuscan 6464.
  4. Black(?) long gondola probably NYC.
  5. Car 3 looks like a red Barrell car.
  6. Operating boxcar of a light color, maybe white.  Door was open but nothing was visible inside.  However there is what looks like an operating plunger hanging down from the center of the frame.
  7. B&O Timesaver 6464.
  8. Gray depressed center flat with red transformer load.
  9. Unknown 6464.
  10. Western Pacific 6464
  11. 2 dark single dome tank cars, maybe Shell?
  12. 2 unknown 6464's.
  13. 2 short hoppers, probably black Lehigh Valleys.
  14. 2 more 6464's, one had a white or silver roof.  (Fake snow on cars obscured many details.)
  15. And a lighted center cupola caboose with what looks like a white stripe below the roof line.  Possibly a Nickel Plate or NYC and maybe not a postwar piece.

Some film credits obscure the train just as the engine passes and then the scene switches just as the transformer car starts to go off screen on the right.  Much of what I could see clearly was from a later shot where you see the train reflected against the inside of the window and over Ralphie's coat.

Anyhoo, I could only do this with an older VHS copy.  Maybe someone out there has the DVD and can pause and zoom to find out what what roadnames are present?
