Williams Help ?s
Posted by traindaddy1 on Sunday, August 21, 2011 9:07 AM

Am trying to sell this car on E-Bay for a neighbor.  It needs a new truck.  There were no bids.

I will relist it but I probably will need to give a little more information.

Would you know when this aluminum car was originally made and was it part of a set?

Also, I see that there is no Railroad Line name plate.  Do you know if this Railway Express Agency car, #2540, was made without a line designation?

As always, many thanks.

From what I can see in the photo you posted(unable to read the name on the car), it looks like a passenger car from the Santa Fe "El Capitan" train set by Williams, was part of the Crown Edition series if I am correct about this car. I have that set, so that is why I am mentioning it, bought the whole passenger and engines, six passenger cars and three engines(one powered A unit, one unpowered A unit and one unpowered B unit with sound) for $400.00 about 12 years ago. The truck assembly can be ordered from Williams by Bachmann for about $15.00 plus shipping. Marty at MA & PA Junction may have the part for less then ordering it from Bachmann's website.

You might want to try posting it for sale at www.choochooauctions.com

Just an FYI, I think that train set I am referring to was made about 15 to 18 years ago. As you can see I got a really nice deal on that set, bought it from an independant Williams dealer who was selling down, also got a Williams S-2 steam engine, Pennsy 6-8-6, for $200.00.

Hope you can sell that passenger car!

Follow-up: Well, it has been a few days since my post. Since then I have posted on several different sites and have received quite a few comments and suggestions.

Here is my latest question regarding the truck:   If it does not sell "as is", and it were you, would you replace the one silver truck OR would you replace both with black trucks?  (My Lionel aluminums have black trucks but, looking around, I see aluminum cars with both silver and black. )

Side note:  Bachmann-Williams' price quote for one was $15.00 + s&h.    Two other parts guys wanted $18.50 and $21.00  plus their s&h.  These were for new. None had used. Any suggestions?

As always, many thanks.

Depends what is broken on the coupler, wether it can be fixed or not. If it is not closing or staying shut; use either a rubber band wrapped a couple times around the coupling device, or use a plastic tie strap to keep it closed. Lionel post war wheels work with several models of Williams cars.

From experiance with Lionel when it comes to fixing broken couplers and trying to sell model train cars, you lose money, so sell it as is. If you get $30.00 for the car, after repair parts cost you barely make any profit, that don't include shipping or insurance, as the buyer usually pays for that.
