Cleaning/lubricating standard gauge
Posted by Taranwanderer on Thursday, March 3, 2011 10:39 PM

A friend asked me to clean and lube his standard gauge, #33 NYC locomotive (green with the red and gold trim.)  I've never had any dealings with this type of engine, but I've cleaned and lubed my share of PW locomotives (which is why he asked me to do this one.)  I just wanted to see if any of you all had any suggestions for this job.  I was planning to remove the shell (it looks like it's held on by two screws on each side, 8 in all,) and doing my standard, "PW" style cleaning of a WD-40 soak, Q-tip cleaning, and tuner cleaner rinse, followed by point-specific lube with Labelle's.  Any other ideas or things to watch out for?  Thanks in advance!

If the engine has not been rewired, you are likely going to find bad insulation on the wire.  My quick and easy technique to fix this is to unsolder each wire at one end only, remove the old insulation, and slip some shrink tubing on the old wire.  Then solder the wire back where it was.  This eliminates the problem of making a drawing of how the loco is wired.
