Shay Geared O-Gauge Steam Locomotive
Posted by KRM on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 6:48 PM

I have been wanting to build a logging camp on my layout when I get it started and would like a Shay Style Geared Steam Locomotive to use on my 0 and 027 layout. Is there anything out there like this?

Tks,

Kevin

K-Line made one awhile ago and some are still available from Western Depot (I think) and both MTH and Lionel have made models of some of the larger shays in more recent years that you should be able to find. I don't know if any run on O-27. Another option could also be getting a Bachmann On30 shay which is basically an O scale narrow gauge locomotive. Those run on HO scale tracks and don't cost nearly as much as a Lionel, K-Line or MTH locomotives (I think they all have sound and at least the Lionel and MTH ones have command control, the bachmann On30 ones might come with sound if you pay a little more and possibly DCC) and that's including the track.

Thanks SantaFe

I saw some of them but OMG $1,000 to $1,500 ++ and need 50" + Curves won't work for me. I have young grandkids and thought I may of overlooked something built in the past I had not seen. I just love the design of the old Lima Shay style of engine. I would of thought someone made them before.

 Thanks again,  Kevin!!!

Yep, they are a lot of money. We paid around $250 for a G scale bachmann shay though it doesn't have much of anything in it. I added a cheap sound system to it, but that's about all it has in the way of features. The Lionel, MTH and K-Line one all have control systems and sound and are all metal. As I said in the last post though, look into the On30 stuff, a Locomotive a couple of cars, track and a transformer will probably cost you less than a single locomotive made by the other three companies and they don't look too bad. They also have forneys, climax's, 4-4-0's, 4-6-0's and many others and you can easily find them for under $200 apiece.

Yeah I guess I need to research other engines used for logging. The Lima style was used most in the northwest so I will see what they used in WI and the midwest on flater ground. I have around 100+ pieces of 0 and 027 rolling stock and a few Lionel 6361 cars I want to use to build the logging train with. So I have to stick with that. the Lima's are just sooo cool.

Guess I will have a beer and go to bed.

Thanks SantaFe!

I do love the shay out of them all, I know Lionel's done a heisler and MTH has done a climax. K-Line also has done a few somewhat oversized porters (0-4-0's) in logging schemes that are attention getters and run well. They don't have traction tires so they can't pull a ton, but if you double-head a couple of them you can get quite a few cars going around a layout (only tried on the not so level floor of our 85 year old house at christmas-time)

When did Lionel do a Heisler?  I know they have the Shay, MTH the Climax but never seen a Lionel or MTH Heisler.

They were in the 2003 Volume 2 catalog. They do cost a lot too though. I'm not sure if MTH's ever done one. K-Line did a nice 2 truck shay, Western Depot has them for $700 (?) Here's the link to the Cass Scenic RR one: http://www.lionel.com/Products/Finder/ProductDetail.cfm?ProductNumber=6-38061&expandBranch=0&Keywords=Heisler&CategoryID=0&RailLineID=&CatalogId=
