How does the 1688 pick up track voltage.  I am looking at one on ebay and don't see rollers or slides?

I found a picture on ebay of another engine.  The unit has slides like the 1666.  How many of these did not have u-units?

the ones I've seen have E-Units now someone may have removed it and then it would only run forward or there may be one that the E-unit is bad or stuck and its just running forward or the E-unit is in the locked position and its locked in just forward but all I have seen all had a 3 position E-unit but not saying they didn't make them without one as not sure.

Those with e-units will have an "E" after the locomotive number.

Thanks guys,  The owner didn't respond so I quit bidding.  Probably not a bad unit but I don't believe it had an e-unit and there were no pickup slide on the bottom.  I think I will wait for a nice 1668 or 1688.  I keep learning everyday!
