UPDATE ON LIONEL VISITOR'S CENTER: LAYOUT WORK HAS STARTED
Posted by Anthony SRR on Monday, August 23, 2010 8:52 PM

Evening Folks, Here is an update of how work is going on the LIONEl layout, I think you can see we are moving fast After the museum got the layout to New York the First Step was to renovate our old storage building into an exhibit hall. In the months since installation has gone in and the drywall has been put up with the room spackled and painted with a sky blue celling. AC and Heat have been installed in the original Potato storage room along with a modern state of the art security system. The following pictures illustrate the work that went on. Today, After placing the container closer to the building to make it easier to move the layout in, the layout was transported into the building. The pieces where hand carried by a large number of volunteers on hand in only a few hours. The layout was placed on the floor and saw horses to prepare for the reconstruction. Much work will be completed over the fall and winter months for the Grand Opening on April 9th 2011. The storage container will be removed from the property and sold to help fund the reconstruction. THE WORK COMPLTED SO FAR WILL BE AVALIBLE FOR DISPLAY AT THE RIVERHEAD RR FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND, THE 28TH AND 29TH Still Available from the museum the LIONEL Visitor's center boxcar commemorating the layout in it's new location. Anthony, Is this the same layout that was at the Lionel Visitor's Center in Chesterfield Michigan?

I was in Michigan this summer and looked into visiting Lionel in Chesterfield--Oops!  Had not got the memo that it had closed!  Now I know where to come!

Here I thought I was going to have to go to Deyang or Chengdu or some such place to see Lionel Wink

That's great that the Lionel Visitor's Center Layout has found a new home!  I visited the layout in 2006 when it was located right next to the Lionel headquarters in Chesterfield Michigan.  There's lots of action and it's a great looking layout.  I would love to visit New York someday and see it in it's new location.  Here are a few shots.

Here are a couple shots when it was being dismantled in 2009.

It's also great that you are commemorating the event with a grand opening boxcar.  I also have the 1992 Visitor's Center grand opening boxcar.
