During the LOTS Convention in Hartford, CT. I took a ride on the River Valley RR boarding out of Essex, CT. They had some great rolling stock staged in their yard.

Its been an eventful week here on the Blueboard Central Division of American Flyer Lines.  For months the City Fathers have been promising that the streetlights in the business district of town would be working "soon".  The old guys down at the coffee shop have had plenty to say about the workings of govenment and how back when FDR was in office there would have been a whole contingent of workers assigned to get the street light project finished.   Well, earlier in the week there were broadsides plastered all over town that the lights would be lit on Wed evening.  I wandered downtown late in the afternoon with my good old Kodak Brownie.  And sure enough the City Fathers made good on the promises.

Early in the afternoon the business district looked pretty much as usual.

And even as the sun started going down there wasn't much of a hint of what was to come.

Except that the shadows started growing longer.

But then just at dusk all of the church bells began to ring and from the loadspeakers on the top of the municipal building you could hear the strains of the old song "Under the Electric Lights", and a magical thing occured.

Downtown was bathed in light from the new street lights.

I'm sure glad I hung around to see the mavelous sight.  I can hardly wait to see what happens when the City Fathers decide to decorate for Christmas.

Great photos all.

Spankybird - That is a great looking coal operation you have there.  Is that the original Lionel coal house?  Is it lighted?  What is the yellow building with the gray roof behind it?

NW Flyer - I'm glad to see the citizens now have lights; the streets are now safer.  They look great.  Did you use sandpaper for your street?

Thanks,

Joe

Greg (NW Flyer),

Not sure which I enjoyed more, the photos or the associated narrative. Thumbs Up

Yes it is the origainal Lionel coal House. The yellow buildings is a speeders house. I believe is was made by Crossroads

Thanks Spankybird.  The speeder house looks great.  I was not sure if it was part of the coal station or something you added.

Thanks again,

Joe

Joe,

The citizens of my little town do indeed feel safer now that they can see their way around on dark moonless nights.

The streets are made out of roofing shingles that were left over from the roofing job we had done a few years ago.  I read the suggestion to use shingles in a CTT article withing the last year I think.  I played around with several materials and this turned out to be the easiest option.  I like the way the streets look.

Doug,

Thanks for the compliment.  If you've kept track of the stories that have accompanied my photos you know that there are all kinds of amazing things that happen in my little town.

NW Flyer,

Thanks for the reply.  Your streets look great.  I used sandpaper for the runway of the airport going on our layout and I like the way it looks.  I was still trying to determine what to use for the city streets.

 J.....sweet 736!

Bill......the closest operating steam engine to me is about 2.5 hours North of Boston out of Conway NH.  Conway Scenic Rail Tours.

Spanky.....what a coal operation you've got "cooking"!

Northwoods......looks like the the public works projects in the Blueboard Central are coming along much quicker than the ones in my town!  Wink

Great shots guys!
