AF Post War Royal Blue engine repair #556
Posted by jcolonbc on Sunday, May 16, 2010 7:09 PM

I am trying to bring an old AF #556 engine back to life.  What is the best way to test the motor and reverse unit?  Are rebuilt motors available?

Jim,

Mike Hilbert wrote a great article in CTT a while back covering the restoration of a 556 Royal Blue.  I can't recall the exact issue though.  The motor can be tested by the following:

1.  Connect one of the wires from the field coil to one wire from the transformer.

2.  Connect one brush wire to the other wire from the tranformer.

3.  Connect the remaining bruch wire to the remaining field wire.

To reverse the direction of the motor, reverse the brush connections.
